2024-25 NHL Misc. Thread

I won’t defend it but with the two teams It’s hard to determine who to hate more or who is defending themselves against the goonery because their both full of borderline lunatics that have no intention of making hockey plays.

But, of the 2 I’d rather play Toronto because they are capable of playing and winning without gooning it up. Florida on the other hand…it’s there only move at this point and they’re dangerous…as in health wise dangerous.
That series has been a boiling cauldron of goonery. Florida probably pitches in a bit more than Toronto and Bennett 100% upped the ante with that head shot on Stolarz, but that doesn't let Domi off the hook for skating the entire width of the ice to hit a guy who (correctly) had no idea he was coming and wasn't eligible to be hit at the time of contact.

At least nobody in that series has whacked an official with their stick ... cough, cough, Marchment.

You can see my comments about officiating in the Canes/Caps game thread, but this is all simply the fruit of the horrid state of NHL officiating. You've got a bunch of cowards and incompetents out there policing the players. Of course this is what you get.

Domi was fined $5,000, the maximum allowed under the CBA. Nic Roy’s fine was more than that because he had a hearing; the fine limit after a hearing is $10,000.

It wasn't even remotely a hockey play and thus should be suspend-able ... but ... yeah. Why bother at this point?

Another “result based” decision. 🙄 Wonder if Barkov had been severely injured if the decision would be 5k.
Survey says………. Uh no

It’s the same stuff every playoff season— a different set of rules for the post-season and as a result, a different game is played. Come playoffs, it’s not so much skill, talent or speed. It’s the desire for chippiness and old school hockey. As a result, player safety is compromised, hockey becomes a game of attrition and teams are expected to engage in shenanigans to “prove” they want it more and to help with ratings.

The League needs to get serious about the amount of the fines levied on players for over the top B.S...it should be at least as much $$$$$$ as the luxury vehicles they drive. Most of those guys don't bat an eye at $5,000, or $10,000. Consider how much a game check is, then think about how painful $5K is. Lame@$$Fines.

Jim

It's part of the deal, so to make the fines higher, the players' union will need to OK it in the next round of negotiations.

But yes, these fines do not come close to being a punishment.

Florida Panthers minority owner Doug Cifu has been suspended indefinitely by the league for inappropriate social media activity. An in person meeting with Bettman will be scheduled at a later date.

"Cifu is the CEO of Virtu Financial, which he co-founded with Viola in 2008."

Well, yeah. The guy can't even spell virtue correctly. And this is reason number fifteen million for public figures to avoid interacting with random people on Twitter/X.

Virtu is also the name of an excellent white wine blend from St. Supery in Napa. Two wildly different uses, so I looked it up.

It’s a noun, from Collins dictionary.

1. a taste or love for curios or works of fine art; connoisseurship
2. such objects collectively
3. the quality of being rare, beautiful, or otherwise appealing to a connoisseur (esp in the phrases articles of virtu; objects of virtu)

So it kind of works for a boutique financial services company.

BTW ... sounds like the Kings are in the short rows on their GM search, and they've landed on ... drumroll ... a guy who's been a GM multiple times before. Shocker. Ken Holland, come on down. Slowly. You don't want to break a hip.

The league has released the Offer Sheet compensation levels for this year.
Important in theory because THIS offseason will be the wild wild west when it comes to teams targeting high end RFAs via offer sheets. At least that is what SOME people are speculating, especially with St. Louis' huge success in pilfering Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg away from Edmonton last offseason.

The counter to that 'Offer Sheet Mania 2025' is that with all of the extra cap room coming for 2025-26, no team is going to be so up against the cap that they won't match any offer sheets. We won't know that is really going to happen until it happens. In the meantime, expect plenty of offer sheet speculation.

Given the Canes large amount of cap room and willingness to use the offer sheet process, I anticipate that the Canes will be dropped as a team that could potentially go after a bunch of different Type 2 RFAs. The Canes themselves fortunately have no Type 2 RFAs that anyone would care enough to sign to an offer sheet. For the record, we have all of our own picks necessary to cover all of the offer sheet compensation levels (if we really do play the offer sheet game).

Yeah, I don't see Carolina playing that game. I do think that St Louis' relative success with those two guys they plucked from Edmonton last summer might encourage a few teams to give it a whirl this time around. Holloway in particular ended up being a pretty important player for them, for a pretty modest acquisition cost. Broberg didn't mesh so quickly but then he turned it around and played well in the playoffs. Those mid-level guys with 2 or 3 years of NHL experience are still where the offer sheet scheme has real value, I think.

All of the offer sheet hype is going to be about Matthew Knies and Evan Bouchard. I doubt Knies ends up anywhere other than Toronto, and I don't expect he would sign an offer sheet. Bouchard will be looking for $9 million+++ per, which some team might foolishly offer him.

But I think you are right JB...the real value is in the players that have sort of been blocked for one reason or another. Those are not the big name guys who put up points and are looking to get paid, but rather the player who is looking for an opportunity. The offer sheets are gold for those types of players...they can get paid way more than the team they are on would ever offer. St. Louis hit the jackpot with Dylan Holloway. The trick of course is identifying these players and being willing to overpay them for a shot at acquiring them.

Or just scout really well. St Louis is paying Holloway all of $2.3 million AAV, and they parted with a couple of picks. For a guy that comfortably slotted into their Top 6. Big freaking whoop. Broberg is a bit of an overpay at a $4.5 million AAV, but he'll more than likely settle into being decent value at that cap hit before his deal is done.

So, you sacrifice a couple of picks and a modest financial commitment to acquire somebody with proper NHL experience and plenty of game tape. If you are a playoff team with roster holes, an empty prospect pipeline and some draft picks, freaking get your scouts engaged and go for it. Forget Knies and Bouchard. The better bet is on guys like Mavrik Bourque, Nick Robertson, Pontus Holmberg and Gage Goncalves. Decent players blocked from bigger roles on good teams with real Cap problems and bigger fish to fry.
