2024-25 NHL Misc. Thread

Yeah, Roddy had a Ridgeline when he was playing. The rest of the guys gave him a hard time about it, but the embarrassing one (for me at least ) was Francis' ridiculous huge Mercedes with the custom "Franchise" license plate. So freaking full of himself.
I used to see Rod in his black Ridgeline all the time. We didn't live too far from each other back then. I was driving an F150 back then and came to hate that thing. My Ridgeline is getting old, but is paid for, reliable somewhat economical, and the AC works great! Its everything I need now. I can't magine having a $950 car payment these days. Its crazy!

Wasn't it Jeff Daniels who drove the old Accord when he came to Raleigh? One of the "older" players did way back in the day.

Wait?! That hockey stick actually fit in the bed of a Ridgeline?! HA! I just keed.
I can put a bag of golf clubs (2 if I need to) in the trunk of my Ridgeline! There's a trunk UNDER the bed. I love it! My kids hated it when I sold my F150 and bought the Ridgeline. Bu they weren't the ones having to pay the constant repair bills on the Ford. And buying the gas...it got 12 mpg.

Did not know that about the Ridgeline. Neat. Useful!

The only vehicle that I regret getting rid of was my 2002 extended cab V6 4x4 Ranger. I sold it and by the end of that day, I had extreme seller's remorse and I miss it to this day. It's amazing how much crap that little guy could haul. I bought a vintage BMW motorcycle in the Bat Cave area and it fit in the bed of the Ranger and had no problems getting it back to Raleigh.

The Blackhawks hired Jeff Blashill as their head coach. It worked out well for the Red Wings. After they fired him, he was an assistant in Tampa for the last 3 years.

A couple of guys drove beaters back in the old days. Nolan Pratt and some other young guy used to have a townhouse near my place and he drove one of those small body Ford Rangers. Pretty sure he sold to somebody in the neighborhood when he left the Canes because I still see a VERY similar old truck every so often. Veteran minimum contracts and basic rookie contracts weren't paying all that much dough, so why waste it on a fancy ride? Same with the Euro guys who don't live here. You just need something to get you around, so why waste money on short term leases? Buy a beater and sell it at the end of the season.

Leafs news ... Shanahan is reported to be out as President of the Maple Leafs, after it had previously been reported that he had received permission to talk with the Islanders about a similar position.

Look, the Shanaplan was going better than the Yzerplan in Detroit, but only if you ignore the expectation scale. The Leafs were and are competitive in the East but never managed to get their collective mess together sufficient to test it against the West. Shanahan's patience with their core group was frankly kind of refreshing on a lot of levels, but ultimately futile. He also has curious tastes in GMs. Apparently the Leafs might just skip the executive role and allow Brad Treliving a bit more reign to move forward. Yes, that sounds kind of silly to me too, but ... hey, it was time to make changes and this is definitely a change.

As for the Islanders, they love a name brand. Period. It's rarely if ever gotten them anywhere, but it is what it is. Roy. Shanahan. Whatever retread old boys club washout they end hiring as GM. They'll be run by household names, so they won't get any of those awkward questions from the hockey men. That's all that really matters, right?

At least the Islanders moved on from Garth Snow. I also kind of think it’s funny that Shanahan just might follow Uncle Lou

He didn’t. The Islanders hired Mathieu Darche as their new GM and executive VP. He had been assistant GM in Tampa for 3 years and was previously their director of hockey operations for 3 years. He played 9 seasons in the NHL, playing 250 games and scoring 30 goals and 42 assists before retiring in 2012.

By the Islanders' normal way of doing things, Darche is a big swing. That said, he's also a guy who has interviewed for a million jobs and been around Tampa's front office forever, so he's got the stamp of conventional approval. If you don't feel like paying a big name to tear down your roster and start over, then conventional wisdom say go with a younger guy who's got a lot of pro personnel experience. I personally like that thinking better than a pure retread, but it's still well inside the box.

We've been busy, but I don't think we've talked enough about Chicago hiring Jeff Blashill as their head coach. Talk about uninspiring. Of course, he was really highly thought of until he got the job in Detroit and promptly ran out of ideas. I'm not sure the Wings ever played a recognizable system the whole time he was there, so ... fun. Hawks fans sound they're about as enthused about the hire as I am. This hire screamed "we don't want to pay much but this guy has experience." Yeah, bad experience.

Last year I replaced (but kept) my old 1997 Ranger with a Bronco that I love now. I still need a pickup: I haul all kindsa stuff and my wife is a gardener - the Bronco ain't a truck. The Ranger has never given any problems and still drives and rides great. It gets good maintenance.

At this point, I don't want any of the other three teams to win the Cup... I honestly wish they'd all lose.

Edmonton... because of the Connor McDavid show and Jeff "I played in a playoff game!" Skinner.
Dallas... Mikko Rantanen pulled a Shanahan on us, and for that his chosen team can suck it.
Florida... well, duh.

But the Canes don't deserve it and someone has to win it.
