2024-25 NHL Misc. Thread

Former Hurricane Brett Sutter was promoted to head coach of the AHL Calgary Wranglers. He played from them from 2022-24 then moved behind the bench as an assistant. He played 35 of his 60 NHL games for the Canes.
 
The Kraken traded Andre Burakovsky to Chicago for Joe Veleno. Burakovsky has 2 years left at $5.5 million and had 10 goals, 27 assists. Veleno has 1 year left at $2.275 million and had 7 goals, 8 assists for Detroit and Chicago

Good for him. He just never really had the tools to play above the AHL level but he was always really sharp positionally ... as you'd figure coming from that family. I hadn't realized that he had gotten on the coaching ladder.
 
Blackhawks are buying out dman TJ Brodie. He had 1 year left at $3.75 million, but his actual for 2025-26 was $3.225 million, with $2.45 million of it as a signing bonus. He‘ll count $3.23 million against the cap this year, $258k next year.
 
Brodie is in his mid-30s and I feel like his best hockey was nearly a decade ago. I know Chicago saw him as a veteran presence to help their youth grow but he's been cooked for awhile now.
 
I'm seeing Dallas' name attached to interest in a variety of guys they have no way to pay ... from Marner to Rasmus Andersson ... along with rumors that they want to wait until August to make a call on trading or re-signing Robertson. There's no way that stuff gets out there without somebody in the front office having a quiet word with a few reporters, and BAM ... I remembered one of the predominant reasons that some GMs are more highly regarded than others. They make sure the press have something to write about, even if it's not real. Other GMs like Bill Zito in Florida are very active but much more buttoned down about keeping their moves quiet. One very big reason the press loves Jim Nill is because he makes it easier for them to do their jobs. Jim Nill is in a Cap Hell of his own making but he wants to make sure that the press sees him out there moving and shaking and striving to make his club better ... even if 90% of it is BS, which clearly it is. I mean, can he find $12-14 million for Marner? Sure, if he can get the league to allow him to skate a 16 man roster and he can find some suckers to take some dead money off his hands and/or he takes out a hit on Tyler Seguin. Otherwise, of course he can't.
 
Trevor Zegras has been traded to the Flyers per Elliott Friedman. Ryan Pohling and a second and a fourth rounder to the Ducks. Verbeek again not the sharpest GM in the drawer...seems a bit lite on the return.

The 2nd round pick is this year, 45th overall. The 4th rounder is next year.

Poehling has a concussion history too. Does Verbeek actually know what he’s doing?
 
Apparently Quenneville didn't think he was worth keeping so they finally quit dangling Zegras and pulled the trigger for what they could get. I'm not at all sure what he actually is as an NHLer, but I know he can't play center on a team with any kind of expectation of defensive responsibility ... so that basically makes him an under-sized wing who needs the puck on his stick to be any good. Kinda limits the market. I like Poehling if he can get a run with good health. Unlike most guys with his size, he's got wheels and can add some playmaking to the bottom 6. It seems like a glorified bag of pucks, but Zegras is just such a specific flavor of player.
 
That shows you how far Zegras' stock has fallen. He's a highly skilled floater whose offensive production cratered and who has been hurt multiple times since signing a bridge deal for 3 years at $5.75 million AAV. They might have done well to get that 2nd round pick to be honest, but they definitely sold on Zegras when his value was at its lowest point.

There will be some highlight reel plays with Zegras and Michkov next season for sure.

Expect this trade to really fire up the 'Marner to Anaheim' speculation. Marner and Zegras are pretty much exactly the same size, and they play with the same level of physicality (zero), but Marner >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Zegras in every aspect of the game. Especially on the defensive side of the puck.
 
Yeah, I just don't get who the heck Marner is supposed to play with in Anaheim. With Zegras moved out, they're really shorty on high end skill. They appear to be building a grind it out group for the most part. I mean, is his market value going to survive a couple of years playing with Leo Carlsson and Chris Kreider? Or Troy Terry and Ryan Strome? I get that the Ducks have all the Cap space in the world, but you have to offer something beyond just cash.

Yeah great points to ponder, if the Marner camp are as particular as they say they are on the right fit, I am not sure Anaheim as currently constructed is the best idea. I will say that the kid the Ducks drafted a year ago in Bennett Sennecke by all accounts is a really nice player that could eventually be a number one center, but not sure if a high end prospect like that will be ready in the next year or two. The Southern California market seems like a place where Marner could be far away from the Toronto noise which he may like but is that team close to contending anytime soon?
 
Bottom line ... if Marner is actually doing the short term, high dollar contract to try and get back to market when he's 30 or 31 ... then he's going to want to be on a team where he's not just featured but successful. Anaheim and Chicago just aren't going to do that for him in the next 2 seasons. Carolina, LA and Vegas (of the teams consistently mentioned) are in position to get him to the next step in the best shape. If he's just looking for big paycheck, max term deal then maybe some of the building teams come into it. If it's the short term, double dip UFA markets thing, then nah.
 
Canes-adjacent notes from the losing side ... I think Zac Dalpe was hurt for most of the season, but has been back with the Checkers for the majority of the last 4-5 seasons. Likewise, fellow former Canes farm hand Trevor Carrick returned to the Checkers this season and was in their lineup for the finals.

Former Canes farmhand Justin Pogge is the Canucks goalie coach. He played 4 games for Albany in 2009-10 and 48 games for Charlotte in 2010-11.

Also on the losing side is head coach Geordie Kinnear, who was an assistant in Albany under Tom Rowe and Jeff Daniels and then moved to Charlotte and was an assistant for 6 years. Former Cane Bobby Sanguinetti has been his assistant for 3 years. IIRC, he had retired to Wilmington, NC and the Checkers lured him back near the end of the 2018-19 season and he helped them win the Calder Cup.
