2024-25 NHL Misc. Thread

Here are the details. Taking advantage of both the last of the 8 year contact and before the percentage of signing bonus to salary changes.

Bennett 8 @ $8M FLA deal:

Yr 1 1M Base & 9.2M signing bonus
Yr 2 1M & 8.28M
Yr 3 1M & 7.82M
Yr 4 1M & 7.67M
Yr 5 1M & 7.67M
Yr 6/7/8 1M & 5.12M

No move years 1-5. 20 team no trade year 6. 16 team no trade year 7/8.
Bennett somehow managed to get credit for giving the Panthers a home team discount and still rip them off. Honestly? That's his style. Well played.

My favorite part of the draft is when the kid had to stand in front of a wall-sized iPad and look like a kid fresh out of Wake Tech during his very first job interview he's ever done.

More Pat Verbeek news ... he's FINALLY pulling the trigger on a Gibson trade and apparently sending him to Detroit for Mrazek and 2 picks. So, that's him selling both Gibson and Zegras for basically scraps after spending two years demanding huge returns for both. Fun.

Nice get on the 2nd rounder, but otherwise they traded away a guy they wouldn't even discuss shipping out at the deadline for less than a 1st and a prospect for Mr Azek and a bag of beans. Non-magical beans.

I wonder if that deal makes Hofer easier or more difficult to move. He is probably ready to be a starter, and that's kind of tweener money ... cheap-ish for a starter or platoon guy, expensive for a backup.

Vegas and the Leafs working on a sign and trade deal for Marner, if that goes down that’s probably a gigantic 8 year x $13 or $14 million for Marner. Former Cane Nic Roy rumored to be part of it per Friedman.

Our friend, Coach Ryan of Hot Garbage Sports, teaches us everything we need to know about faceoffs. I never played organized hockey* so I didn't really know any of this.

*in Northern Michigan in the '70s/'80s, organized hockey was a rich kids sport. Plus indoor rinks and leagues were all in Traverse City which was a bit too far away in the winter from where I grew up. My tiny high school now apparently has a hockey team. My how times of changed.

On June 21, the Kraken traded Andre Burakovsky to the Blackhawks for Joe Veleno. They placed Veleno on unconditional waivers today for purposes of a buyout.

Tampa placed Conor Sheary on unconditional waivers for purposes of contract termination. So no buyout.

Chris Johnston and Pierre LeBrun have more details on the new CBA. Behind what was already posted, here are a few more:

  • An effective end to 3rd party salary retention. A 2nd retention on the same contract can only be executed 75 days after the first retention.
  • Neck protection will be required for all players entering the league for the 2026-27 season. Players with at least 1 NHL game will be grandfathered.
  • Fitness testing is prohibited during training camp or the regular season.
  • AHL paper loans are eliminated. Teams can’t accrue cap space by sending a player to the AHL on paper only, they must play at least 1 AHL game before they can be recalled.
  • Owners are now responsible for all workman’s comp and employer tax payments, removing about $70 million cost from the players share of revenue.
