2024-25 NHL Misc. Thread

LOL! It's been 5 years *already*?! It feels like he's only going into year 3. Oh lord I'm getting old.

Ok, amended, his contract toxicity seems to be right on schedule.
Yeah, I don't think we would have gotten very good odds in Vegas on Dougie's contract being "worth it" after year 4. Honestly, I think Carolina would have happily extended him if they could have gotten him on a 4 or 5 year deal. If nothing else it would have saved them a couple of trips on the Tony DeAngelo train and Burns' slow decay over the last two seasons.

Former Hurricane, Checker and Wolf Andrew Poturalaki signed with KHL Omsk. He spent last season with AHL San Jose, once again leading the AHL in scoring, with 73 points in 59 games. He played 3 games (the most NHL games he played in a season) with the Sharks, registering an assist. That gives him 3 points in 9 career NHL games. Potsie is 31 and had a $500k guarantee last year in the first year of a 2 year contract but it was terminated at his request in May.

If the Canes signed any of those guys I'm out. Legally not guilty doesn't mean anything concerning who they are as people.
Legally and morally are two standards for me, but I’ll always hold someone to the ethics of a situation. A group of guys and one drunk gal, lots of text messages going back and forth— yep, morally heinous. The role of the governing organization in the cover up, another example of bad leadership and poor ethical standards. I think the NHL letting Joel Q. back behind the bench is heinous— that guy should have been buried.

The NFL did it pretty correctly in how they “rehabbed” Michael Vick— that’s the proper way to give a 2nd chance. Granted he went to prison, but the NFL also gave him a decent path forward, too.

Maybe Chris Terry could rival him in the speed and hands department.
Two peas in a pod, for sure. Terry was a bit more mobile, for my money. He was just a hair off of being able to play NHL hockey while Potsy wasn't particularly close.

There is one fewer hockey pundit in the blogosphere. Frank Seravalli has been hired at prep school Germantown Academy, outside Philly, as their head varsity coach. He coached the Philadelphia Blazers 11U team while running Daily Faceoff

What a weird career arc Seravalli has had. Rose from Flyers beat reporter for the Daily News to kind of a permanent second fiddle to Bob McKenzie role at TSN, where he stuck for a pretty long time. They canned him in a cutback, but I don't remember the hockey press shedding many tears over it. Then after a bit of a break he came back as the lead content guy at DailyFaceoff and immediately started breaking news all over the place, starting with leaking Seattle's entire expansion draft. And now he's ditching reporting entirely to coach at a prep school? I mean, sure. Obviously.

After ranking the best contracts in the league, Dom Luspellcheck is back with the worst. Jonathan Huberdeau was ranked as the worst. The Preds pair of Brady Skjei and Nic Hague were 4th and 5th (maybe Trotz should have stuck to coaching?). Sam Bennett was 8th. Why?

No one who knows puck cares that Sam Bennett is on this list. His presence here is merely a formality, one based entirely on his modest regular-season stats. Big whoop — that’s not what he’s paid for.

No Canes were on the list, to the surprise of no one.

(tongue in cheek) But KK.

Ummm...Dallas Stars, what in the hell are you doing?

Running amateur hockey like a business, basically. There was a fair amount of local angst when the Canes moved to town and started to get involved in youth hockey but that has settled down over time. The Stars though, have been much more aggressive in growing their youth programming and less responsive to the community.

KHL club Kunlun Red Star folded, the 2nd KHL club to do so since the end of last season. Their roster was sprinkled with has beens and never wases; Brandon Yip, Nail Yakupov, Jake Chelios, former Checker Tomas Jurco, 2016 Canes 3rd round pick Hudson Elynuik, etc.
