It’s a good piece. Basically Marner raised expectations by always asking (and getting) the upper band of his salary — hard to win if nobody on your team is signed at even the smallest discounts

Reminds me of Laine. He scored a lot of powerplay goals when he joined the Habs but statistically, the Habs' powerplay numbers actually went down after he arrived. The idea of him was greater than the reality of him. Seems to be similar to Marner. He produces a lot, but it seems to be mostly empty calories.

The question is, how do you get better without Mitch Marner. Not in theory, but in reality.
If we signed Bennett and Ekblad, or Bennett and Marchand, for Marner's money, then okay, I can see it.
But if those Florida guys never make it to market or sign elsewhere, if it's even possible to get two for the price of one Marner, I don't see how it happens.

Unless Marner goes, and they dump Domi, Krok, and Kampf too and sign two of the rats.

For sure. I don't think there's any chance they lose all three.
Ekblad most likely to stay imo since he's already stated his clear preference. Bennett likely to go. Marchand I assume will probably leave.

I think Marchy is likely to leave. Seems like the other two want to stay, so will depend on how much of a Florida discount they’re willing to take, I think.
But they also have Lundell. But they would still need a centre and there are no good ones available…
