2025-2026 Off Season Thread - The Rehappening

The assets you get when you blow up your roster during a full tear-down, tank and rebuild are just a side benefit—especially since a lot of guys by definition will be getting sold off at low points of their value.

The main benefit is that after you’ve sold off everything of value, you get high first round draft picks that give you the best chance of snagging elite young talent as a result of your team now being shit.

So beginning a full tear-down, tank & rebuild when you don’t own your own first rounder for the next two seasons—sheer idiocy. And in your case, also wishful thinking, since that’d be the best way to ensure the Leafs are a bottom-feeder for as long as possible.
And I'm sure if they followed his advice and gave him his ultimate hockey porn outcome, and drafted a bunch of guys with first rounders they don't have, he'd be completely complimentary about it all and rave about how they did the smart thing and brought in the necessary new blood.

Or he'd say everyone they drafted is shit too.

Not sure which, but definitely one of those two.

the self sabotage by the leafs is just ridiculous.

2018 first (ras) traded for ??? Profit
2019 first traded for 180 games of muzzin
2020 first to unload marleau
2021 first for 8 games of foligno
2022 first to unload mrazek
2023 first for like 15 games or ROR
2025 first for McCabe (ok)
2026 first for Carlo
2027 first for laughton

That’s 9 of 10 first round picks with basically one long term cornerstone player to show for it.

They would hav been way better off jjst signing some rfas to stupid contracts.
We currently have all of our 2028 picks !

It's almost like this dummy doesn't like our team, but it's tough to say.

Maybe another million posts expressing his unfiltered and unbiased opinion will finally provide some clarity.
I went through this with the Habs. There were plenty like you, the Counts of the world who only care about scratching for a playoff spot and declaring that the Habs "cannot" or "will never" rebuild because the fans would never accept it.

But people like myself and Geeman said, and continue to say, "Fuck the fans." Tear it down to the studs and rebuild properly, however long it takes. If you hire a competent GM it doesn't take nearly as long as you think it will.

Now I cant say whether or not Treleving is the right GM to oversee such a tear-down and rebuild but it doesn't alter the fact that said tear-down and rebuild is necessary. You just have to commit to it and not bail on it before it's done.

But as I said during the playoffs Im over the Leafs because at some point they went from being comical to just plain sad. I cant hate them properly when they're this pathetic and inept. They need to be dangerous. They need to be a team that rivals fear so that when they fail it feels good to shit on them. Right now, piling on this team is like fighting a guy in a wheelchair. So I want the Leafs to improve a little bit.

Not only a dumb strategy, but stupidly executed. How many good guys did we pass on over the years to trade down and take two bad guys?

The very first time Dubas did it, he traded away the 1st rounder Philly used to draft Travis Konecny in exchange for 2nd & 3rd round picks he used to select Travis Dermott, Jeremy Bracco & Martins Dzierkals. Not a single one of whom is an NHLer.

To run even more salt in that wound—the next player selected after Dermott was Sebastian Aho by Carolina.

I was disappointed every single time he traded down. There would always be a good name or two on the board still, and we had to pass on them and go with a couple of long shots.

Leafs tore it down as much as possible to land 34 , too late now

After the Habs debacle was the time to start moving core pieces

Hold on a second, I was told by many here that this was a brilliant strategy.

Dummies

Like everything, it's great when it works and sucks when it doesn't.

When you trade a late first and pick up two seconds and draft Knies and Hutson with them, you killed it. When you do it and leave Konecny to get Dermott and whoever, you got killed.

But in general, I still want my late first instead of a bonus pick.
