2025-2026 Off Season Thread - The Rehappening

Tavares is coming back for sure, it's just a question of whether it's $5m or even less. Glad your secret love for him is finally coming out.

Never thought he was a captain, nevermind a good one. Never thought he was worth 11 million. I've never questioned whether he was a good hockey player, he obviously is. He's just not an 11 million dollar hockey player that I wanted as one of our most important players. I feel pretty good about those takes given what we've seen the last 7 years tbh.

Him taking a real home town discount to stay would warm my heart a bit and I would evaluate him differently as a 4.5 million dollar player than I would as an 11 million dollar player, definitely.

I wouldn't mind upgrading D to be honest. I don't know how much Ekblad will demand, and he's injured a lot, but he's tough to play against. I wonder if Carlo could recoup a 1st rounder from another team, and then we sign Ekblad to replace him.

Ekblad's contract projection is 7.9 fwiw, and I'd be tempted as well for the same reasons Bennett is tempting. At a 113+ million dollar cap, 7.9 million is #2-3 defender type money. Carlo is super cheap though, especially with the retention we got. I'm not a huge Carlo fan at all, but if he ends up as the defensive anchor to the bottom pair for 3.4, okay.

Yeah, I want all of the cunts.

Bennett's 6.6 sounds a bit high, but the cap is sky rocketing over the next few years (until Trump drives the world economy off of a cliff....)

25/26: 95.5
26/27: 104
27/28: 113.5

So Bennett making 6.6 of a 113 million dollar cap in year 3 of a 6 year deal would be the equivalent of paying him about 5.1 under this year's cap levels.

Just fucking do it.

I wouldn't be mad if they signed Bennett, but I bet he gets way more than that.

Maybe. AFP was pretty bang on last year but with the cap going up so much over the next few years, who knows, some front offices might try to get ahead of the crowd now.

I think its fair for Bennett based on the numbers, but it doesn't factor in cunty/60.

Its the Chandler Stephenson contract, but he's Chanderl Stephoenson that hockey people jerk off to.

I think people assumed Stephenson was pretty pretty good offensively on top of the champion stink. Was just coming off a ppgish playoff run, had two years as a 19mpg ~65 point forward.

and fwiw, 6.6 is a pretty decent raise from Stephenson's 6.25 despite being the lesser offensive player. That's a pretty good cunt bonus.

We can argue, but I'm going to keep using AFP's projections. They were really good last year. Funny, the only contracts I remember them getting wrong were that they considered both Tanev and Domi to be overpays by 300-400K and 1-2 years of term each if memory serves.

lol, so yeah maybe Bennett is getting 7+

I want them to find guys like Bennett, Luosterainen, Rodrigues, Verhage, Montour, OEL, Schmidt, Mikkola on the scrap heap for nothing, and if they trade assets do it for guys like Reinhart and not guys like Laughton.

Imagine they traded Minten and a 1st for Byram or Tuch instead of Carlo.
We had the rights to Rodrigues years ago and didn't qualify him.

Mirtle:

The Leafs are expected to move forward without a president for now, with Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment CEO Keith Pelley assuming an active role above GM Brad Treliving. MLSE is going to be making cuts throughout the organization in the weeks to come; this would be just the start of the streamlining.
