2025-2026 Off Season Thread - The Rehappening

It's an iffy one for me. His p/60 over the last 2 years is worse than guys like Bobby McMann and as far as centers go, comparable (or worse) to guys like Nick Bjugstad, Charlie Coyle, Pius Suter, Cirelli. No one that produces offense at that rate really makes all that much money so it would be tough to break the bank.

I get it though, intangibles and stuff. Just hate the optics of constantly taking Florida castoffs at market value. Not sure it's a winning recipe.

In theory, Florida should be able to offer him less and get by with the tax savings pitch, so why wouldn't they keep this key cog?

Unless he's just determined to go elsewhere, in which case, does he really want to join us?

Florida's a pretty smart team, I bet they let him walk knowing they can replace his production for way less than he'll command on the open market.

Do they look like they miss Montour?

Yep. The winning recipe is paying Florida prices

Bennett at 6.6 in 2-3 years is the same as Florida paying 4.4 under last year's cap when they won the cup. Ekblad even moreso, they've had him at 7.5 the last bunch of years.

With the cap exploding over the next year years I think the play is just to target who you want now and pay them. 7.9 this summer is 9.5+ 2-3 summers from now.

Yeah, we're not smart enough to be Florida. I've long given up the idea that we can be the smartest team in the league. There are worse strategies for these idiots to follow than just paying the key guys leaving the teams run by the smart guys.

6.6 for Bennett is fine and probably fair and I bet even Florida would be interested in that. I guess I'm not really convinced that's gonna be the price though.

What would Shanahan's legacy even be if they didn't draft these three guys, and then on the strength of them, get Tavares to come?

With all of Mindz's cap exploding talk, now I'm also thinking teams will just pay whatever this summer.

Maybe Marner does land his $14M from someone.

The best is a video of Biz and Yandle I saw where Biz is saying no fucking way to Marner back on the Leafs at $14M and Yandle saying that any team will take him. So then they go back and forth a bit because Yandle is a fucking dummy and doesn't understand, and Biz asks him, ok, so how much do you let your Panthers sign him for. And he said he'd only pay him $8M. Which is hilarious. Not sure this exchange could've been any dumber.

Sure but FL being able to roll back prices 2-3 years is not insignificant…. Plus in 2-3 years, he’s over 30.

Florida collects and originates very nice contracts — Verhaeghe, Forsling, Mikkola are some others
