2025-2026 Off Season Thread - The Rehappening

Yeah, I'm straight up out of patience with our young players bending our front offices over for market leading money for their production levels.
I suspect that not only the will the team that overpays Marner reget the signing, but also that Marner will not finish out his contract with said team.

Marner will get the VC treatment, in year 6 or 7 of the deal he signs the media will start into "it's time to forgive and forget" narrative.

I predicted that he wouldn't finish this last contract with the team when he first signed it. Once bitten, twice shy.

I do think he'll provide something resembling a return on investment in the regular season on this deal. So for a team trying to make the playoffs, he's probably not a terrible investment of 13-14 million. For us though? I'd gladly take a small hit in doms on regular season quality if it was for guys who show up when we need them to in the playoffs.

Yeah, definitely possible he chases max AAV instead.

most people think cap is going up (as inflation is permanent) so if you're young enough, why not set yourself up for another mega contract down the road

I guess the issue for Mitch is that he's already 28, so what's the play? Taking a 3-4 x 14+ or something is fine as long as you end that still in your prime and not injured and then there's someone willing to throw another big bag at you as a 31-32 yr old until you're 39-40 at a higher cap number (should be 110-115 millie by then). If someone offers 7 x 13.5 now though, that's tough to turn down.

Has to do what's best for his family, he says? I may know where they reside. And I may know which summer league he plays in. That happens to be where his family resides. Sort of makes one think.

Edmonton fans watching that

"Of course there's unfinished business here"

I figured it might get done quickly but maybe he wants to see if they get a goalie.

We have Stolarz, Oilers...you know you want him...

I can't reiterate this enough, and apologies to Arty and Worm when I say this because they live there.

But Edmonton is one of the worst places in North America to live, point blank period. Worst winters in the league by a fair margin, one of the smallest cities with one of the smallest metro areas, but unlike a bunch of other questionable ass cities with teams in the league, Edmonton has no affluent suburbs of note to escape to if that's your bag.

No one should be surprised if he decides to pull the pin and go elsewhere.

I didn't live in Edmonton long, but I have to strongly agree here.

Probably a little different if you're a young family, I can see a lot more appeal then. But not for a millionaire star athlete.

One thing Edmonton does have on Toronto though is that its traffic is way better.

Feels like there’s one of two options with McDavid.

Either he re-ups on a gargantuan eight-year deal in relatively short order—sometime during the first week of July.

Or he gone.

If it’s the latter, it’s going to be an absolute media circus of speculation between now and July 2026.

eh I don't think Ekblad is a #1. Forsling was their best d-man both cup runs. and pretty sure Montour got more icetime than Ekblad too, and was the top PP guy.

this year Ekblad was on PP1 at least.

all that said, I'm prolly interested in Ekblad. but we gotta clear our Rielly or Carlo to facilitate that move.
Ek wilL spend half his time on LTIR
