2025-2026 Off Season Thread - The Rehappening

Guy Lafleur was never captain of the Habs even though he was usually the best and most talented player on it. Leadership isnt just about goals and assists.
Well, Montreal had Cournoyer as captain, as he should have been, when Lafleur was at his prime. There was a clear pecking order, and no shortage of leaders to pick from. When it was Lafleur’s turn, he was gone

Once Cournoyer retired and Savard left for Winnipeg Lafleur could have been made captain. But they went with Gainey instead because Lafleur made management and ownership nervous. His off ice lifestyle was too colorful for their liking and he was outspoken. Basically the same reason Maurice Richard was never captain.

I suspect that Leafs management didnt want to give Mitch the Bitch the C for the same reasons.

Maurice Richard was made captain in 1956, and he was captain when he retired.

  • On Friday, we weren’t sure whether contract talks between the Toronto Maple Leafs and John Tavares were close or far. We were told they are “in the process” of negotiating. Well, earlier today we were told the two sides aren’t close, at all. While we are still 10 days away from July 1, leaving plenty of time to iron out a new deal, it sounds like the Leafs have pitched a three-year deal worth less than $4 million per season. That won’t get it done. Let’s see how things progress.

Adios.

I’m 100% ok with JT moving on.

Take a step back next season. Pelley cleans house and maybe a new regime can come in.

That means you have faith pelley knows what he is doing.

From seeing him involved with TFC i would say you want him as far away from picking a regime as possible.

Pretty simple here imo. Tavares was worth 11 million once in his 7 years here. He was a value deficit the other 6 seasons. We're obviously not going to get any of that money back but if he wants to be here, he needs to be ridiculously team friendly. Don't care that he had his 2nd best year as a Leaf last year, we (over)paid him for that already. I'm cool with doing some CBA stretching nonsense to get the cap number down as far below 5M as possible, but the cap number definitely has to be down or else go enjoy 8 millie in Utah.

Stamkos is a pretty big guiding light on this one. Popped 40 in the last year of his long term deal with the lightning, got offered a team friendly deal and took the money in Nashville instead, scored 53 points for 8 million this year and still has 3 years left on that new deal. Don't be Nashville, be Tampa.

The C market is very thin in FA and as much as we "overpaid" him before you have to look at the cost to replace him this season.

Assuming Bennett stays in FLA that would leave granlund and suter as the next best C's after Tavares.
