2025-2026 Off Season Thread - The Rehappening

If Tavares is going to return to Toronto either he or the team has to blink and show a sense of desperation.

I really dont think it's going to be the team.

And honestly, if he doesn't either i think that's perfectly fine. I truly think there is a 3/21 deal out there for him in say, Anaheim. Like Marner his playoff failures and underwear hole fucking wont bother certain teams who want to add production and a psuedo leader to their room.

The C market is very thin in FA and as much as we "overpaid" him before you have to look at the cost to replace him this season.

Assuming Bennett stays in FLA that would leave granlund and suter as the next best C's after Tavares.

If we just look at expected regression based on some of his luck this season...he's been a 13.2% shooter over his career, but shot 19% this year. Just a regression to his average would mean a 26-27 goal season with the same amount of shots. That's the other thing, his shot attempts and shots were down heavily last year compared to the previous seasons.

Shots/Shot Attempts (per game)

22-23: 3.5/5.8
23-24: 3.5/6.05
24-25: 2.7/4.6

Expecting him to repeat last season's shooting luck, and paying him in the hopes he does so, is a really good way to give him a 2nd contract he won't live up to here and this is of course ignoring the playoff failure.

I would rather roll Cowan our as our 2C than pay Tavares 4 x 8 or some shit.

Yeah, I'm under no illusions here. Just like Marner, there are teams out there who he's worth a Stamkosish deal to. We're just not one of those teams he's worth that to. We played this game for 7 years and it ended comically.

There are teams that need John Tavares much more than the Maple Leafs, but the Leafs can still use John Tavares.

It just depends how much Daddy Amulet wants to stay close to home, and if he wants to cash in on one last deal he's well within his rights there should be no hard feelings and unlike Marner he should be cheered upon a return with appropriate video package.

Can we replace his regular season production? No

Can we replace his playoff production? Yes.

I’m not paying you from 35-39 for what you did in the regular season in your early 30s. Eat shit.

Yep, that's exactly it. I am okay with paying him from 35-39 for what he did in the playoffs in his early 30's though...sure Dude was a 50 point winger in the playoffs. I'm cool with starting our valuation of him there. What is a 35-39 yr old 50 point winger worth?

They should be cutting bait on even more players. Reilly, Domi, Kampf, Jarnkrok, Reaves could all go.

Complete retool of the roster. Only a couple more kicks at the can with a prime Matthews. And even then I’m almost done with him too.

There's a good argument for keeping Domi tbh. He's probably a pretty ideal budget winger for Auston. He's a pretty big reason why Auston's goal scoring didn't dip during the stretch we used Domi-Matthews-Bertuzzi together in he 2nd half of 23-24. Domi's big weakness is defensive and possession driving. Matthews covers up those major weaknesses about as well as anyone in the league would.

As for Rielly. I don't know if he's as cooked as he is just not a fit in the system Berube used last year. I think I remember Trebitch saying something about pushing Berube to be more aggressive this year, so short of us finding puck moving somewhere, giving Rielly another go around might not be a terrible idea. Though with that said, if we can flip him for a similar body upfront, that's an option to. I wouldn't dump him just to dump him though. He's still a well above average PP QB and 5v5 puck mover.

They rest, yeah they can all fuck off.

Domi-Matthews-XXXXXX
Knies-XXXXX-Willy
Robertson-XXXXX-McMann (and yes, I'd be pretty surprised if Robertson is here for training camp)
Laughton-XXXXX-XXXXXX

Is how I see the forward group at the moment. Remove Robertson if you're so inclined. I still hold out hope that we're going to give him a real look in a top 6 role before we jettison him to go score 25+ every year for someone else.

I entirely understand the urge to move on from him. Pretty flawed player, but he's cheap for what he brings, shows up in the playoffs and has a skill set that seems to work with Auston at 5v5. You can always mix and match him based off of situation, put a better defensive winger out with Auston when you're up a goal in the 3rd, etc.

Jarny pretty good value at 2.5M
