2025-2026 Off Season Thread - The Rehappening

I’m okay with that, but this notion that we’re going to replace a key player (who also had 13 points in 13 playoff games) with guys who don’t bring half his production but will just find ways to produce in tough playoff games is unrealistic.

You think we can't replace 13 playoff points with 13-14 million dollars?

I think it's quite a bit easier to do than you're suggesting.

One game is one game though. Yeah, it feels way further away when you look at the results of game 5 and 7, but that's the point of moving on from 22 million dollars in forwards that combined for 1 apple in games 5-6-7. Spending that 22 million on anything useful strikes me as an important step in winning games like those instead of losing them.

Agreed.

I assume his main point was key player in the regular season.

Also, if you are going with a Berube system and you think said system is going to win in the playoffs it might be best to give Berube some Berube players. Youll probably score less and be alot less fun in the regular season though

Which Marner?
The 100 point Marner and the PPG playoffs Marner. I know we’re crapping on him for the lack of late series goals, but out of all of them, he’s the least expected to score them. And the rest of the core 5 who we do expect to score went dead silent in the last several games. Marner deserves criticism but we’re being unduly cavalier about his loss being meaningless.

They also might be inclinded to take a look at the older vet short term market to see costs? Kane, Pacioretty, Benn? Something like this might be better than like paying Brock Boesser.

Yeah, I was looking at the UFA list either, and there's not a lot I want to spend money and term on. But short term veterans who can do middle 6 thing roles? There's a few.

Actually I think I posted the graphic about his no goals and 6 assists in 18 late series games. So he’s been absent on both fronts there, but it’s hard to exclusively shit on the guy for this past playoffs when none of them did anything.

If they can sign Bennett long term for noncrazy money, and fill in the roster with one year guys, that’s the way to go. Or Marchand short term if we can’t get Bennett.

I really don’t want a bunch of multi year guys who aren’t difference makers. That’ll literally be the end of us.

I'm not shitting on him. I'm evaluating his performance and making a determination as to whether or not losing that performance hurts our chances at winning important playoff games.

When games tighten up, he disappears at a level none of our other monied forwards do. We're not going to miss that.

I admit I haven't read much about this debate but yeah, if the leafs lose a 100 point winger and a 70-80 point center, then it's gonna be really hard to be as good as they were last year. I have no solutions to offer, just mostly accepting that they may suck next year. But maybe they'll be a better playoff team or some shit. A bit more open minded about that possibility

Hard to dispute that based on past performance, but he’s an elite mega talent who excels at both ends of the ice, so I have a hard time just expecting future performance to be more of the same. Feels like he’ll join Vegas, go four rounds, lead all scorers and win a cup his first year away. But whatever he does, he does.

We’re going to have a hard time doing better. Even shitty Laughton came with some decent playoff track record and was worse than ever with us. I don’t know what it is about this team that we’re always the Hymanor and never the Hymanee.

You’re open minded about that but not vacuums?

This might have been a meth enduced halucination, but I could swear that in Trebitch's year ender he said something about us having to play faster and more aggressive in the future.

If said, it feels like one of those things said in the moment of being a collossal failure and forgotton in camp. Coaches dont change

McDavid, with Matthews to be his 2C, Tavares as his 3C, Nylander and Knies on the wings, good goalies, good defensive D, Cowan maybe a difference maker. Even if the team wasn’t his childhood team, it’s super attractive to join, but even more so since he dreamed of being a Leaf.
A super attractive team to join us one that is already a proven winner like Florida. And your other faulty reasoning is to think that the Leafs are better than the Oilers when the evidence proves otherwise. If that were true, the Leafs wouldn't be constantly getting their asses handed to them in the first round.

McDavid going to the Leafs would mean just as much work for him as staying in Edmonton. If he wants to go to a team where he's a plug and play Cup winner he goes to the Panthers or Knights or Stars or Lightning, all of which are closer to winning than the Leafs.

You have a shit ton of coping to do this summer. Marner's gone, Tavares could be gone, Bennett's not coming and McDavid is NEVER coming.

If the Leafs want to be a Cup contender they may need to take a step back next season and do a proper clean out before stockpiling again.

If Tavares leaves for money then he is phony pajama boy.
