2025-2026 Off Season Thread - The Rehappening

not much out there past the Florida guys. going to be some bad contracts handed out as usual on the 1st, maybe even more than usual with the cap set to rise sharply

Florida is going to find a way to keep them. Maybe they would do the whole ditch the guy before the payday thing when they were looking for the right formula to win. But now they've gone back to back and will want to just keep shit intact to win as many more as they can with this group. They will probably lose one and keep the other two.

Here's Florida's basic breakdown:

They have almost exactly 19 million in cap space, with 10F, 5D, and 1G signed. So even just signing the 2 obvious ones for team friendly deals (Bennett at 6.5 x forever, and Ekblad at 8 x forever) would still put them in a position where they would need to sign 4 bodies for less than 4.5 million (everyone leaves a bit of a buffer for managing injuries)

It's doable, but the question is whether they want to do it. Or if they want to just sign one of the three, and then replace the other by going out and trying to find cheaper value.

It's a shit option and I hate it but it's the least shit of all the options they'll likely have available. So I think I do, yeah.

Running it back more or less guarantees we just continue getting the same results we've gotten. Making changes opens up the possibilities that we might actually do something relatively smart and see some improvement.

I was on board for letting the core 4 era run it's course and see what we got out of it. Well, it's run it's course and it fucking sucked. Find your balls and let's move on.

Yeah I guess my point is that they're probably fucked no matter what. Barring a miracle offseason, there are no good options.

Tanev impresses me when I watch him. He's sort of an amped up Lorentz, who I really liked and want to return.

It's a matter of money. I'm not blowing $3M or $4M on him.
No thanks. Minimum or bust.

We don’t need to spend over minimum on scrub/4th liners. Give some marlies a chance. Use the money we do have available for guys that can actually make a difference.

Then you are part of the problem.

Look at it this way: you've tried the run it back formula for 8 years and have received the exact same results every time. Sure, changing things might mean the results get even worse (although how you get worse than the Leafs in the playoffs I don't know) but so what? All you're arguing about at that point are degrees of failure. If you change the mix sure, they might do worse, but they also might do better. We don't know for sure. But what we ab-so-fucking-lutely already know for a certainty is that running it back did not, is not now, and never will yield a different result than you've seen for these 8 years.

So what, at this point, do you have to lose by blowing it up? Nothing! The team is already a failure, already a colossal, post-season fraud. So try something, literally anything, else, and see what happens. Worst case scenario? You get eliminated in the first or second round for a 9th straight year or miss the playoffs entirely. Again, so what? You were headed for failure either way.

Face the fear.

Yeah, dude is a 33 yr old bottom 6'er. I'm good with adding depth players who actually move their feet, but the cost has to be in line with the role.

it will probably end up being a lot closer to running it back than people like.

our GM is average, and he has very little he's willing to part with that we're aware of.

the best thing he can do is NOT sign a bunch of middling players for too long. It's throwing good money after bad at this point. I doubt they have the courage to even walk away from Tavares, but we'll see next week.
