in the NFL, new GM/coach means new system and immediate roster shakeup if players don't fit the new vision
 
Because in the NFL, changes get made to, unknown, change things.

In the NHL, change is largely an illusion to placate fans and media. The changes made, such as they are, amount to rearranging deck chairs on a boat. What they actually want is to maintain the status quo for as long as possible which keeps them employed for as long as possible.

The Habs did this for years, lurching from one incompetent coach or GM to the next. For most of that time, Ronald Corey was the de facto GM and the GM's and coaches were his sacrificial meat puppets.

You blame the dumb owners for doing this

NHL isnt ruthless like other sports , hockey is famous for kicking the can down the road and retreads going from one team to another

Pretending to do stuff while merely maintaining the status quo is what NHL teams do best. It keeps everyone employed.
 
Why should we expect an owner to know much of anything useful? They buy sports franchises as status symbols, not because they have a functioning clue about how the game is supposed to be played, how an organization is supposed to be run, etc.

It's a dumb owners fault when they get in the way because they think they know things but clearly don't, not when they're humble enough to get out of the way and keep the bills paid.

Or you can have dumb GM`s like Dubas and Presidents like Shanny waste a decade

Smart owners turf them way before its a problem or they go hand in hand like dumb Pegula and dumber GM

Issue is in this market people think it's fine to be a plug and be a "Leader".
When Scott Laughton was acquired and the biggest thing mentioned was his 'Leadership" I got really worried.

Leafs need goals to win in the playoffs. They don't need some 4th liner yapping.
