2025-26 Canes Miscellaneous Thread

Why is the Hurricane's powerplay so bad...again? This has been a problem for years, yet it hasn't been resolved.
Is it coaching?
Is it perssonel?
Is it holding off for that ideal shot?
Is it failure to collect rebounds?
Is it lack of go for the throat attitude?
Is it all of the above?
Something else?
I don't know how to set up a poll or I would, because I'd like to see other's opinions on what's lacking or broken.

Honestly, Brind'Amour is as stubborn as a goat and sometimes his willingness to stick with a player or a system because of his belief that it will work out eventually is both a blessing and a curse. That said, the power play has been somewhere between slightly above average and dismal for the majority of his tenure and it's not like the team hasn't gotten results anyway. So ... yeah. I'm not saying you don't try to fix it, for the record.

IMO if you're looking for a quick fix/one simple trick kind of answer, it's that this roster lacks a netfront player who can do much more than screen a goalie. This team doesn't get a lot of tipped goals in the crease and they don't get a lot of bang/bang rebound goals in close. Weirdly, because that's literally all he's good at, they have really missed Steph Noesen. I point that out because it's easier to fix than going out and getting an elite setup guy even though that would also help tremendously. It sounds stupid to say what the power play really needs is a player like Kucherov or Marner when there's only a couple of guys on that level. But yeah, that's one reason I was so high on taking a swing at Marner last summer.

Shockingly, they’re not practicing today. They will hold a morning skate tomorrow.

In my day broken bones were splinted with a broken hockey stick and duct tape. Cuts were an old pair of socks or tee shirt duct taped over it. After the game, 2 aspirin and a bottle of beer. On to the next game.

Because that was before bubble wrap. And before X-rays.

Looks like PP quarterback maybe
Fensore is a left shot, Legault and Nystrom are right shots, so one pair had someone on their off side. With Fensore, they’ll be back to 3 righties…Chatfield, Nystrom, Walker and 3 lefties…Reilly, Nikishin, Fensore.

Makes sense.
Geez, the front office is juggling to make good combinations. Slavin carries a big load? Franchise player....

Fensore is a premium puck hauler ... a guy who can and will skate the puck out of pressure. He really popped in those two NHL games he got late last season, almost exclusively because he's an elite skater, which really helps when you're his size. The D group prior to this move struggled with a variety of things, but zone exits under pressure were a real problem and recovery speed was a problem for a couple of the pairings. This should help with both issues.

To get back to playing their style, the Canes have GOT to get better at turning the first pass into the neutral zone to recycle possession. That's the critical element that backs up their excellent forechecking pressure from the forwards. Size is nice, but speed makes that part of the puzzle easier to solve. If the Canes are going to find a way to play their kind of hockey while all these guys are out, it's GOT to start with limiting shots against ... which has been frankly out of hand over the last two games. The easiest way to do that is to get that recycle game going.

The boys are practicing today. Per Walt Ruff, this is how they’re skating. Ghost is in a regular jersey, so good news there. Kochetkov is taking most of the reps in the 2nd crease

Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis
Hall - Stankoven - Blake
Svechnikov - Staal - Martinook
Jankowski - Kotkaniemi - Nadeau

Reilly - Walker
Gostisbehere - Chatfield
Nikishin - Nystrom
Fensore

Andersen | Bussi | Kochetkov
