2025-26 Canes Miscellaneous Thread

Eddie Olczyk is also on the committee. Double ugh.
Eddie just doubles whatever Francis says in that room, by all accounts. Which makes sense given … everything else.

Unless there’s a groundswell for Brindy from some other power base (which seems unlikely), he’s not getting in while Francis has any serious influence in that room

What’s the beef about between RF and RBA? Or more accurately, why is RF holding a grudge?
The story I heard was Rod lobbied for the job when Peters was here and Peters had a reputation of treating some players poorly. When he wasn't considered he told Francis he'd take the job in the minors to get experience but Ron Francis' old buddy Ulf was coaching the team, so Rod went after the Michigan State job, which THANK GOD he did not get. Tom came in and changed history

RF had EVERY opportunity (except an owner with deep pockets) to put his stamp on this franchise— worked in player development, worked behind the bench, was asst GM and even GM. He did not change the culture, he squandered draft picks and was too hesitant to pull the trigger on good trades.
In contrast, RBA has had a real, tangible impact— consider me grateful.

I’m not re-litigating Francis. He was a mediocre GM here and then he went to Seattle and was a mediocre GM there. If he’s got lingering issues with either situation, he can just look in the mirror and deal with it.

Ulf was head coach in Charlotte for 1 season, 2016-17, and then left to be an assistant for Q in Chicago. It was his first and only head coaching gig. Mike Vellucci took over in 2017.

FWIW, Mr. Not an Actual Insider Darren Dreger has been on the socials with a veiled hint that Carolina is talking to teams about moving Nikishin. It’s stated in such a way to to suggest that any talks might be about establish contract value but that’s kind of dumb. In truth, I suspect that Carolina was in the talking stages in one or more of the recent trades (we know they talked to Ottawa about Dumber Tkachuk and they’ve sniffed around Kyrou several times in the past) and Nikishin was likely part of any proposed trade compensation in those talks.

That wouldn’t be terribly surprising to those on this board, but online Canes fans are reacting exactly as you’d expect. The world is ending and we can never have nice things, basically. And for context, Dreger was the one hinting that Svech wanted to be moved back in November when he did that stint on the 4th line. So, not exactly an unimpeachable source.

Why is everyone (not on this board) acting like Nikishin is Nik Lidstrom. Are they watching the same game I am? Don't get me wrong, he is a nice player but he is not some untouchable god at this point and I don't think he ever will be. He is a nice 2/3 pairing defenseman. I have no problem including him in the RIGHT trade.

He piled up great stats in the KHL, has a hard shot and likes to thump people. Absent a huge leap, he is what you say, a 2/3 pairing guy.

In their defense, they were told for several years that Nikishin was the best defenseman in the KHL and one of the best prospects not in the NHL. There was a LOT of talk about him being a top pairing player and potentially a Norris Trophy candidate straight away. And in the meantime, he’s been JUST good enough to still see that potential if you squint a little. I get it. Kind of. He’s a big boy with a big pedigree and a big shot who likes to hit. It’s easy to look past just how long it takes him to change directions when you have that tool kit.

Plus, the internet fan community is a weird, personality driven place where factions of people cling tightly to individual players for all sort of reasons that aren’t particularly fact-based. Remember the stubborn faction that was convinced that Hayden Fleury was a diamond in the rough being held back by Brindy and Gleason? Before that there was a group convinced that Noah Hanifin was actually better than Slavin and Pesce. It doesn’t have to make sense.

Well he’s potentially a top pair guy with excellent offensive ability with size and physicality. But yeah I agree. He’s a chip. A pretty valuable chip but it’s not like he should be untouchable.

I think they’d move about anybody if the return was right and aligned with both short term and long term goals. I think I love being a fan of a team that thinks like that.

And for the record, Nikishin, Demidov and Michkov are big reasons I’m clocking a slide in the level of play in the KHL. In the past, young players with the level of achievement those three guys piled up in the KHL would make the transition to the NHL look effortless. It’s been FAR from that for all three of them. All three are talented young players, no doubt, but WAY less well prepared than we’ve seen in the past out of KHL guys with multiple productive seasons under their belts.

There is a huge difference between shopping Nikishin and being willing to include Nikishin in a trade for something that improves the overall team.

I like Nikishin, but he is a luxury to have as a 3rd pair Dman. Other teams are going to heavily value him so he is a fantastic trade asset for us, one we can afford to lose as part of a package for a high end talent. I'm glad we held on to Nikishin and didn't trade him away when he was just a prospect. Now he has proof of concept, which should make him more valuable if we decide to include him in a trade.

I hate to break it to fans who think that rolling the entire roster back is the best thing to do. SOMEONE has to go out via a trade if this team is really going to try to get even better while also preparing to still be a top team 2-5 years from now.

Could be Nikishin. Could be Blake. Probably will be Nadeau. The only thing for sure is there will be fans who scream bloody murder. Meanwhile this front office has done what to not get the benefit of the doubt? (those fans still won't care).
