2025-26 NHL Miscellaneous Thread

Once this doozy gets signed off and officially done, the top players will point to Carlsson and say, “I should be above that.” Those with comparable numbers at the same age will say, “I should be above that.” And those who are close will say, “Maybe I’m not at the same level, but if he’s at 18, I’m at 15.”

Friedman says that Carlsson’s reps met with the Ducks hours before the offer sheet and their offer was believed to be in the $12-13 million range.

Which was probably a lot more in line. There are a lot of guys in his talent class with recent deals in the $11-11.5 mil range. With Cap creep, that’s roughly 12-13. $18 mil is WILDLY out of line, so much so that I have a hard time believing it will actually be an inflationary contract for other guys.

Mintyukov re-signed with the Ducks, 5 years/$7.2 million AAV. So what will Nikishin cost?

I think Minttyukov has had a longer runway to show his stuff, has Boom shown enough yet? Two year bridge seems like a safer route. What $5 or $6m x 2?

One thing to remember (I will admit I had forgotten this), several of the changes to NHL contract rules that are part of the new CBA extension do not go into effect until September 16, 2026.

Those rules include the limits on contract length (from 8 to 7 and 7 to 6) AND the new percentage of signing bonuses limits (60%). That is why Leo Carlsson's new contract could still be ridiculously signing bonus rich.

Up until September 15th, teams are still allowed to sign their own players to 8 year extensions, sign free agents to 7 year deals, and include maximum signing bonus amounts (limited only by the fact that a player has to at least have the minimum NHL salary per season).

The Pens re-signed a couple of players, including forward Egor Chinakhov (3 years/$6.25 million AAV) goalie Arturs Silovs, 1 year, $2.8 million.

Completely different types of players, really. Still, that WILL be a comp for Nikishin, who is a higher value guy than Mintyukov. That ain’t good news for the Canes, really, but since I’m thinking that it’s pretty unlikely they actually get him re-signed anyway maybe it won’t matter that much.

The Flames signed recently acquired dman Simon Nemec, 5 years/$7.25 million.
Another comp Nikishin in the wrong direction. Nemec is basically a prototype and Calgary’s handing him his bag without knowing for sure if he can even take a regular shift. At this rate, Niki’s psycho agent will be asking for $10 million

The Blues extended dman Philip Broberg, 6 years/$8 million AAV. He has a full NTC in years 3 and 4, a 20 team NTC in year 5 and a 15 team NTC in year 6.

Yeah, Nikishin is actually going to get a $10 mil AAV deal from somebody. He’s freaking Bobby Orr compared to Broberg, Nemec and Mintyukov.

Home opener? Presuming those games in Finland don’t count then I’d guess it’ll be Montreal or Vegas. Either a Finals rematch or a ECF rematch. That’s what they usually do.
