The Bruins signed forward Fraser Minten to a 7 year extension with a $7.2 million AAV that kicks in for 2027-28. It covers 2 UFA years, both of which have trade protection, 16 teams in year 6, 10 teams in year 7. Last year was his first full NHL season, he had 17 goals, 18 assists in 82 games.

This whole resetting of the NHL marketplace on contracts is both fascinating and head scratching.
Fraser Minten probably slots in as a good, young 3C on most NHL teams...so if a young, promising 3C is paid in or around 6 to 7m +, does that mean a 1C will likely slot into a $12 to $18m + slot and a 2C will be making upwards of $10-12m +? A 4C gets anywhere from the bare minimum salary to upwards of $2/$3/$4 million dollars depending on experience?
The jump just seems really high and really fast even with a rising cap projected to climb each year.

It's going to be interesting if the Canes go after any other decent sized free agents, or make a trade for a pending FA. No one on this roster is anywhere close to the new NHL market. And Slaving taking a very modest deal, makes it tricky to bring in any other decent D man. They're all going or be $10m +. A good 1C or 2C will be well over $10m.

Let's just say for shits and giggles the Canes and Boom find middle ground on a long term contract with an AAV at $7.5m...that only leaves $2m and change in cap space. Now a trade for Hellybuck and his $8m or so coming in would certainly see Boom go and probably Pyotr...so many different ways to slice a cat with that $10 million in cap space depending on where Tulsky and company want to go.
The Ducks will place Chris Kreider on unconditional waivers for purposes of mutual contract termination. He wants to return to the east coast and will not report if he’s claimed by anyone else.

I mean, if you could get him cheap and on a one year deal, then Kreider wouldn't be the dumbest way to plug the Jarvis gap. But the chances of getting him on a deal that's both cheap and short are probably nonexistent. If nothing else, the guy can still make a difference on a power play and Carolina's PP is going to take a hit with Jarvis out.
Larkin will be at Detroit’s camp, but won’t be the captain. A new captain will be named once the new hockey leadership team is in place. It will be interesting to see what happens if this continues into the season. The team must name 3 players in the scoresheet. Will they have 3 alternates? Will Larkin be one of them?

Krieder was making what, $6+million? I wouldn't pay him but maybe half that to be honest. And on a 1 year deal.

Nothing like a press release with absolutely nothing important contained within.
His cap hit was $6.5 million but his actual for the season would have been $4 million, assuming the $1 million signing bonus was paid before the contract was terminated.

The thing is, unless one of those young fellas is up to the task, the Canes should take a flyer on Kreider— good size, good hands, a chippy, gritty guy and he’s not a pylon. I could see Krieder being the big net front presence on the power play. The only reason not to consider the option is if he wants term at age 35.
