2025-26 NHL Miscellaneous Thread

It sounds like he was gone no matter what and gave the team a list of 5 teams that he wanted to be traded to, our team included in that.

Whew … I’m glad that gigantic idiot isn’t heading to the Canes. As much as I’d love to add some size to the Canes’ top 6, I’m not down with going full stupid. Never go full stupid.
I would unquestionably bail on the Hurricanes if they'd signed that idiot Brady Tkachuk.

So, now Florida is going to be even more goonish? Sheesh. I thought the NHL was a copycat league and more skill and speed was going to be the focus. Unless the zebras have an epiphany and start calling games according to the rule book, I see steps being taken backwards in the future of the NHL if Florida is setting the tone again.

Who is Florida going to have in goal next season? Stu Skinner? Freddie Andersen?

Yes, this adds more thuggery to their lineup, but I'm sort of happy to see they pretty much blew all of their ammo acquiring Brady Tkachuk instead of doing anything with those assets to acquire a capable goalie or start to get younger and faster on D. I'm not penning them back into a playoff spot quite yet.

I guess we should at least say 'yay!' that another high end player considers us worthy of being on his short list. I do still wonder if Dylan Larkin has also included us on an expanded list. The thing is though, Detroit isn't going to accept just 4 draft picks. They would be asking us for something like Blake, Nikishin and a couple of 1sts. How willing are we to trade someone like Jackson Blake after what he just did this past season and the playoffs?

(to put numbers to Blake, after the Olympic break, including the playoffs, he played 43 games and had 13 goals 27 assists),

The Ottawa fan base was over Tkuchuk after their round 1 exit/sweep. He produced nothing in that series and other than the fight with Staal, which made Staal look good, there was nothing to show for his shenanigans. On top of that, add the fact he is and has been vocal about his support of Trump, never downplayed any talk of the 51st state all while living and playing in Canada’s capital. He was done and the sooner he left Ottawa, the better. That’s a real reason they moved now rather than wait. They’re not going to bring in politics with this, but it was a factor.

If Bob wants to stay I’m pretty sure they can make something work. He’s what? 38 years old coming off a bad season? He’s not going to get $8Mx6 or whatever nonsense he was asking for.

A goalie with his pedigree, wrongly or rightly, will not take peanuts just to stay in Florida.....I doubt anyway. But who know, Bob may be a charitible man

He’s asking for $42 million over either 6 or 7 years.

Regular season Bob has been bad in 2 of the last 4 years. But playoff Bob is a different animal.

That’s the big problem with Bob. He’s not what he used to be and at 37 years old, you’re going to be lucky to get one more of those Playoff Bob runs out of the guy, and yet he wants term AND top money. Pick one and you’re fine, but not both.

OK, so … that trade.

Ottawa … they had to move the big idiot. Not only did he ask out, but he also disappeared on them in the playoffs this year and was an objectively terrible Captain and face of the franchise. Short term, this hurts. Long term, it could be fine. Ottawa may or may not be kicking around an offer sheet for Jason Robertson, which I would do in a heartbeat if I was them. But if that doesn’t work out then go back to the salt mines and start acting like the small market team you effectively are. The Sens best players are 23-25, and maybe they even think about just starting over and building young around Sanderson and Stutzle. You could have worse building blocks. Their fans would hate it, but they should be used to being miserable at this point.

Florida … umm. So, did they just trade for a guy who makes them bigger and more annoying without actually making them that much better? For all of the positives in his game, Brady doesn’t score that much and doesn’t do anything all that much different than a bunch of other guys you already have. Their issue up front is down the middle, and that hasn’t changed. Barkov is All World, but Anton Lundell is still your second line center. Once they get somebody to play goalie, they won’t really have ouch left to rebuild that 4th line either. I get why they did the trade, but Larkin would have made more sense.

The Mammoth gave head coach Andre Tourigny a multi-year extension. He was headed into the last year of his deal. They also hired recently fired Vancouver head coach Adam Foote as an assistant.

I saw where ESPN (Wyshynski) is pimpin for a Hellebuyck trade to Carolina - Nikishin, Nadeau and a 2026 1st........

Discuss........................
I would expect Winnipeg to want Kochetkov as part of the package as well. So Nikishin, Nadeau, Kochetkov and a 1st for maybe something like Hellebuyck and a 3rd.

That is a lot to give up for a goalie on paper. But the reality is that:

* Nikishin is poised to have his salary skyrocket as an RFA after a good rookie season, but not a season that screamed 'top pair superstar in the making'
* Nadeau still doesn't have an open roster spot to compete for, and that might continue to be the case for several more seasons as this Cup window hopefully continues to be open
* If you made this trade, Kochetkov would be the #3.
* Our 2026 1st round pick is #31 overall.

If the Canes made that trade I would not be unhappy about it. My biggest concern though is that if you make that deal, that probably removes too many trade assets to pull off something like a Dylan Larkin trade. Thinking that way assumes of course that we are willing to make a major disruption to the current forward group in order to fit someone like Larkin or Pettersson into the lineup somewhere. I don't really know exactly how the Canes view something like that. I don't expect that Tulsky and crew will hesitate to move any of our top 6 forwards or slide Taylor Hall down the lineup to make room for someone 'better', but I do think those conversations get harder with the Cup win and what Stankoven and Blake did.
And while Svech would seem to be someone we could potentially move on from, his willingness to throw his body around would be missed.

Still completely unclear if the Canes are going to do something big at forward, big at goalie, or just nibble around the edges (or do just about nothing). I think all are equally possible at this point.

Former Canes farmhand Zach Stortini was hired as the head coach of the new ECHL New Mexico Goatheads. They’re the Avs affliliate. His last season with the Checkers was 2018-19 and he moved right into coaching in 2019-20, as an assistant with OHL Sudbury. After 2 years there, he spent the last 4 as an assistant with the Tucson Roadrunners, the Coyotes/Mammoth AHL team.

Without playing favorites :)...even though you always are my favorite in here Cmal because I always enjoy your perspective on all things Canes and your takes usually lean towards where my gut goes on most of these things...I agree 100% that I would not be unhappy about that trade for Helly but agree more so that you know Tulsky wants to be in perhaps on Larkin and/or also in on trying to perhaps fix EP40 here as an option.

Hellebuyck is the slam dunk, best goalie for me out there right now, but I am not sold on that being the Canes greatest need when you consider using all those assets in a trade. Larkin still screams to me as a guy that Roddy would love here, the faceoffs, the two way game, probably even scores more goals here and gets more points in this system. EP40 I was dead set against as part of a big trade giving Vancouver assets, now I think it's more about Vancouver just getting out from under that contract...if EP40 was to come here with a cheap trade cost I think the Canes could stomach the cap hit with a rising cap and he probably does find his game here as a second line guy with less pressure. No way Tulsky stays quiet all summer, but what exactly he decides is the best way to improve a Cup winning great team is too hard to predict right this minute for me!

Here is a trade post floating around the socials this AM...

The top six potential trade targets for the Hurricanes during the 2026 offseason, along with the realistic trade offers required to secure them, are outlined below:
1. Jordan Kyrou (RW – St. Louis Blues)
The Fit: Kyrou represents a highly sought-after dynamic sniper. He is coming off an offensive down year (18 goals in 72 games), which lowers his acquisition cost despite his cost-controlled $8.125M AAV contract through 2031. He provides the lethal power-play weapon Carolina has been missing.

The Offer: Jesperi Kotkaniemi + 2026 1st-Round Pick + Bradly Nadeau. St. Louis wants a fresh start, and taking a flyer on a young center like Kotkaniemi alongside top assets meets their high-end draft capital demands.

2. Dylan Larkin (C – Detroit Red Wings)
The Fit: Larkin sent shockwaves through the league by requesting a trade out of Detroit. As a premium top-six center in his prime, he would give the Hurricanes unmatched down-the-middle strength to reinforce Sebastian Aho.

Yahoo Sports

The Offer: 2026 1st-Round Pick + 2027 1st-Round Pick + Bradley Nadeau +Roman Seeley + Jesperi Kotkaniemi (for salary cap matching). To beat out top suitors like Florida or Minnesota, Carolina must present a massive package overflowing with high-end draft capital and defensive prospects.

The New York Times
3. Vincent Trocheck (C – New York Rangers)
The Fit: Trocheck is a former Hurricane who fits Rod Brind'Amour's heavy, high-forecheck system seamlessly. He provides premier right-handed faceoff capabilities and intense playoff grit. The Rangers are actively managing their trade board and look to free up flexibility.

The New York Times
+1
The Offer: 2027 1st-Round Pick + Noel Gunler. Because Trocheck is 32 and carries a $5.625M cap hit through 2029, the Rangers won't command a historic haul, but they will want a guaranteed future first-rounder and an NHL-adjacent prospect.

The New York Times
4. Connor Hellebuyck (G – Winnipeg Jets)
The Fit: Complacency is the enemy of a dynasty, and the Hurricanes could look to solidify an undeniable, Vezina-caliber tandem with Pyotr Kochetkov as Frederik Andersen hits unrestricted free agency. Hellebuyck gives Carolina immediate lockdown security to repeat as champions.

The Offer:
Gotisbehere + Bradly Nadeau ++ 2026 1st-Round Pick. Giving a player like Nadeau and Defenseman Gotisbehere but it is the exact tier of elite young talent Winnipeg demands to part with their superstar goalie.

ESPN
5. Bowen Byram (D – Buffalo Sabres)
The Fit: Byram's name has resurfaced heavily on the summer trade blocks. He is a young, hyper-mobile puck-moving defenseman who can ease the potential transition if Carolina chooses to weaponize Nikishin or move other pieces on the blue line.

The Offer: 2026 1st-Round Pick + Ville Koivunen + 2027 3rd-Round Pick. Buffalo is seeking high-end scoring wingers or high draft picks, making Carolina's draft assets a perfect platform to start negotiations.

6. Nico Hischier (C – New Jersey Devils)
The Fit: Hischier has officially entered the 2026 summer trade rumor mill as a premier target. He is one of the league's top multi-cat, two-way centers, playing exactly the style of hockey that Brind’Amour demands from his roster.

The Offer: 2026 1st-Round Pick + 2028 1st-Round Pick (via Dallas) + Ryan Suzuki + Jesperi Kotkaniemi. Prising a captain away requires overpaying with multiple first-round picks and NHL-ready youth.
