2025-26 NHL Miscellaneous Thread

Y'all realize that there are seven other large US cities with higher murder rates than Chicago, right? That list includes two other NHL markets--Detroit and Washington.

Oh, heh. Been a busy day. I didn't realize this was a one of our own's AI image creation. Still, I love Chicago and it bothers when hate is thrown its way. Every time I see someone putting down Chicago, I have to purchase something from Harebrained Design.

Yeah, that's pretty much where I was coming from--Chicago is one of my favorite cities. I was fortunate enough to have a business trip there in June and even had the opportunity to grab deep dish at Pequod's for dinner with my colleagues.

I've been a couple times on business trips and enjoyed the city. Had to scale a wall to get a peak into one of Wright's houses not open to the public. Damn, that was a disappointment. Unkempt and one of the rooms appeared to be used for storing boxes.

I have suggestions for restaurants way off the beaten tourist paths if you want to hear them when you're back in the city.

The Athletic published their annual survey of front office confidence rankings. The Canes moved up from 3 to 1, with no grade lower than A-. Bringing up the rear are the Rangers, with no grade higher than C-.

Dom Luspellcheck loves him some Hurricanes.

The Carolina Hurricanes are the model NHL franchise, and while that’s arguably been the case for a few years, they now have the Cup to prove it.

While it's not a surprise, this is so gratifying, and in so many ways!

Pretty hard for anyone to not 'trust the process' now.

Cup is in hand, our cap situation is the envy of the entire league (except maybe by Montreal, who has an equally fantastic cap situation), and pretty much the entire team is back for another run except maybe Nikishin who may very well care more about himself and his personal stats than winning.

All Season tickets bought (at continuously increasing prices). Increased capacity at the arena (to sell even more tickets). You have to dig to find something to hate on the front office for.

Yeah, aside from those teams that sometimes win by going hellbent for leather with a bunch of rentals or short term guys, the most recent Cup winner is generally at or near the top of the confidence survey. Makes sense. In a league as obsessed with only one trophy mattering even a little bit, the team that just won the thing has obviously done something right. I’d have been shocked if Carolina wasn’t on top this summer, since there’s almost nothing to quibble with in the way their front office has handled their business … especially over the last 5 years or so.

Other things that interested me …

Dallas and Colorado have slid a bit … when two of the recent flagship franchises, who still have many Conference Finals between them over the last five years, dip down to 8 and 9, then that’s intriguing to me. You guys all know my take on Jim Nill in Dallas (bit of a fraud) but Colorado has also been banging at the prescribed winning formula pretty hard. Star players, big moves, selling the future to fuel their window. Somebody finally started to notice that, since they won the Cup in 2022, it hasn’t really gotten them anywhere. Likewise Dallas, they definitely give off the whiff of having already peaked.

Utah at 5 … what has Utah done to actually earn this level of buy-in? Yeah, they finally made the playoffs but they got run out in Round 1 by Vegas in a series that wasn’t as close as 6 games would imply. I mean, people should feel like the Mammoth are on the right track, but 5th? C’mon.

Fully 7 teams falling below Vancouver … seriously. You’ve got to have REALLY lost the market when you finish a confidence survey below the moribund band of lost boys who make up the management and ownership suites in Vancouver.

Rangers DFL … speaking of having lost the market. Sheesh.
