2025-26 Premier League Thread

Hull beat Middlesbrough 1-0 in the Championship playoff final. The winner came in the 5th minute of 2nd half extra time. The Tigers finished 21st in the the Championship last season, avoiding relegation on goal differential. They snuck into the playoffs this year when Wrexham only took 1 of 6 points in their last 2 matches while all took all 6.

Hull’s last Premier League season was 2016-17 when they finished 18th with 34 points.

Fine. Two of the more dire yet consistently decent programs in English football. Hard to imagine either one of them summoning the financial resources to actually stick around. So, at least we get an orange team for a year instead of yet another red one.

And so it ends. Arsenal win the league by 7 points after they beat Palace and Villa beat Man City. Spurs survive with a win over Everton so West Ham are relegated for the first time since 2011.

Arsenal, Man City, Man U, Villa and Liverpool qualify for the Champions League. Had Villa finished 5th, the Premier League would have gotten a 6th Champions League spot, as Villa automatically qualified by winning the Europa League and the ”European Performance Slot” would have fallen to 6th in the table. Bournemouth and Sunderland qualify for the Europa League, for Bournemouth it’s their first time ever playing in Europe. Sunderland will play in Europe for the 2nd time, the first time in 53 years. Palace can also qualify for the Europa League if they beat Rayo Vallecano in the Conference League final on Wednesday. Brighton qualifies for the Conference League on goal difference over Brentford. Chelsea finish 10th.

Yeah, sorry to disappoint on the extra Champions League slot, but frankly Villa need the additional slice of the TV money that comes from finishing 4th so … suck it, I guess.

We were awful. And Arne didn't do himself any favors, further alienating us by pulling Mo in the 74th minute, rather than say, 85' or so, like he did Andy. More than a few "what a petty move" comments. 🤷 Loved that Keith Andrews pulled Jordan Henderson in the 60th minute. He got quite the ovation from our fans.
Just disappointed Mo didn't get the goal that would've been a fitting moment. Free kick smashed into the post.
Did get to congratulate the Villans who showed up (about 15 or so). West Ham fans went down the street to watch so I didn't get to commiserate with them after they were relegated.

I'd like to say I'm surprised but of course I'm not. I think Mo's actions since that infamous post-match interview six months back were to pull back the curtain on what was happening behind the scenes. And Slot had lost the fans, which was his death knell as manager.
Iraola is the one several of my fellow Reds desired. We shall see.

Shame. I really like what Slot did last season in his transition year but when you get that far under water with the fan base then you danged well better be convincing on the pitch. And Liverpool just weren’t. Lose the stands, fine. Lose the room? That’s not gonna work.

Yeah, it's tough. He's not the person who decided to spend 200 mil on two players who can only play one position, but something is clearly off. Liverpool are in a transition period and they've kind of started off poorly so let's see how it goes. None of the big signings they did last year strike me as the type of players interested in doing Iraola's style of pressing, so we'll see.
