2025 NHL UFA/Trade Thread

First, one has to look at % of cap, not absolute $. Second, look at the increasing cap with Petry and Allen coming off the books. Third, look at the cost/risk of comparable alternatives. Fourth, look at the minutes Evans plays per % cap and how it contributes to XGA, etc.

Evans 3.5X4 with no NTC/NMC is low risk and good value.

Roster in 2 years probably looks like

Caufield-Suzuki-Slaf
Demidov-Dach-Laine
Heineman-Hage-Newhook
Anderson-Evans-Gallagher
Beck/Roy/Kapenen (would jump in the lineup in place of Anderson/Gallagher if traded)

Hutson-Reinbacher
Guhle-Carrier
Xhekaj-Mailloux

Dobes/Montambault/Fowler

I'm a big maybe on Laine.

I'm okay with Evans at that contact but I think beck at a minimum brings more than him. The one area if prospect strength we have is depth centres. That said. Evans as the guy we pay at the bottom of the lineup is okay just can't pay a bunch of others down there as well.

Caufield Suzuki Slaf
Demigod Dach Hage
Heni Beck Newhook
Kapanen Evans Gallagher

Hutson ufa/trade/2025 first rounder
Guhle Carrier
Engstrom Reinbacher
LM

I think Reinbacher is going to take some serious time next year to get up to speed and then start getting his footing the following season. So we will likely need external help.

The third year I see things getting more interesting. Anderson, Gallagher, newhook, monty probably gone. We can use that space and other assets to add a big piece.

There will definitely be trades in the next 12-24 months, and possibly some surprising ones. My point was that a core of Demidov, Suzuki, Caufield, Hutson, Guhle, Hage, Slaf, Dach and Reinbacher (if he pans out) is perfectly fine (especially if Demidov and Hutson become big stars). To say the team is "nowhere near fixed" is bloody idiotic.

Neither did Price / Gally/ Anderson contracts because we are shit

Habs are getting closer to being competitive and that extra mil or so here and there becomes so important filling the roster

Slaf gets his raise next year and Hutson soon to follow
Here’s your issue, VGK, Sea & Utes are raking in $$$$. Within 3-yrs the cap will skyrocket to upwards of $115M creating significant salary inflation. Today’s $3.5M player will be making $5M in 3yrs time.

That doesn’t even take into account Houston & Atlanta WILL be awarded expansion teams within 3-yrs max.

I'd really like an elite centre still. At least another Suzuki but we have Hage and potentially another centre from the first round thus year. Maybe even Dach can turn into that.

I'm with you. I'm a maybe on Laine as well but we'll see how it plays out. He's a game breaker and we've been needing a guy like this for a long time. I also don't think he's anywhere near 100%. He's still getting back in game shape.

I'm also not sold on the defense and like you I think they'll try to get another RHD for the top pair. Depends on how Reinbacher progresses.

That's the hardest piece to find. There is like maybe 10 in the league. But I think we can manage with Suzuki,Dach,Hage,Beck,Evans.

Yep. The good news is we have another season of Laine to determine that

All of this is 100% reasonable and none of it precludes signing Evans and maybe Armia.

Agreed. Which is why I was hoping for a top pick this year but that isn't possible anymore.

I expect a big UFA swing to stablize the D. And move Reinbacher to 2nd pair.

Did elite level UFA's suddenly change their minds about paying taxes in Quebec? Because unless they did the Habs probably won't be able to sign any.

I expect a trade more than a UFA signing. Only Ekblad this summer would interest me, but his history of injuries bothers me, and I think he resigns with Florida.

Agreed. Almost everyone here was in the WTF opinion when he traded a first for Dvorak.

Nobody thinks it is, not even management

We are now healthy and removing Primeau (-9.5 goals saved above expected, which means he was a bloody sieve) and replacing him with Dobes (+4.6 GSaE for a net change of 14.1 to the positive) compounded with replacing Barron with Carrier that has stabilized the D pairings and you get improvement. Why? Because you addressed key deficiencies.

That's exactly what they're doing Mr. Magoo

They're winning because of the play of the bottom six. You're acting like they're offering Evans a Gallagher/Anderson type contract here.

You need to get out of your own way sometimes and look at the situation properly. You continually use "logic" presented in a vacuum and really need to wake up to the realities of the business. You are like Pronman, you get an idea in your head and no facts or logic can change it. Why? Because you think in a vacuum.

WRONG
