all that does though is get the teams out of the salary, they still have a huge cap hit for doing it, maybe the NHL should allow that, most players are paid in bonus anyway, allow you to cut a player, not be bound by salary but accelerate what is left in the cap

Doesn’t have to be for 2025 picks. And this year is relatively weak compared to other years, but top 20 has NHL players.
Will never work in the NHL, they don’t generate enough money .

Off-season is shaping up to be a sellers market..
I’m starting to think Habs should just tank next season…maybe they get lucky and land McKenna
- let Armia & Dvorak walk as UFAs
- see if there’s a buyer for Gallagher
- deal Matheson
- deal Diekembe, split G between Dobes & Primeau, let Fowler cultivate full time in Laval
- hand over 2C reigns to Dach & 3C to Beck / Kapanen
- internal options to replace Matheson & Savard’s TOI

That, and it does the very thing that the league brought in the cap to prevent. The NHL is not interested in anything tweaking that will in any way weaken the iron grip of the hard salary cap. They know that some owners, if not so restricted, will spend like drunken sailors and no luxury tax will stop them. The only way to ensure cost certainty for a league still dependant on gate revenue is a rock hard cap.

Unless Habs “get lucky” w Tavares. I don’t see the type of significant upgrade at 2C / D available without overpaying.
Offer sheets are fun to talk about, but they’ve come to fruition what < 5x in last 25years and none of those players were “significant upgrade” calber…
Habs don't have a Stankoven to offer up for a Rantanen type player, other teams might. In all honesty, I don’t expect Dal to deal Robertson unless they’re blown out of the water with an offer.

I would target Beniers before Wright albeit a high acquisition cost
can't try to go back, the real fans now have expectations of at least competing for a spot, even if we are to miss. The players also do not want to back to the dark times of 2021-2022 when it was embarrassing to wear a Canadiens' jersey. No way Hughes will deliberately lose this season.
I dont see Wright as the answer at 2C
Habs dont have a 2C unless GlassDach turns it around
Granlund , MD ...only need a 2 year bridge player until Hage is ready
