2026-27 Canes Miscellaneous Thread

Yeah, if reports that Nikishin won't sign there are true, then Carolina kind of has to involve another trade partner if they're going to get enough ammo to trade for Hellebuyck without stripping their NHL group. You either find a partner where Niki WILL sign and flip those assets, or find a partner that wants a bunch of picks in exchange for guys with term and then flip those assets to Winnipeg. The most likely out of those options would be moving Nikishin to a team that can sign him and then make the flip. It's all too complicated to speculate on, but most of us could probably cobble up a mock offer than would work.

We all know what Paul Maurice would have to say about that statement. :sneaky:

There is a woman that sits near us that has been warned a few times. She toned it down and now we hear about the ”flea flippin’ refs” and they need to be on their opponents like “a stripper on a pole”.

I thought that wording was already in there but I'm fine with that, as well as being fine with a well-played $#@*& or two when it's called for. Don't care for 3 non-stop hours of 'em from the guy right behind me though, as has happened from time to time.

The ring looks really cool, but the size of the thing has tipped it into coffee table book territory ... ie for display only.

The perfect coach for the biggest bunch of douche bags in hockey, and somehow they spent the summer adding two more douche bags with the other Tkachuk sister and Gudas...

Number 9 on Friedmann’s 32 thoughts today.

Right now, Carolina is the most motivated pursuer. If Nikishin wanted to sign in Winnipeg, Hellebuyck would already be in Wolfpack country. There are now some teams with permission to speak to Nikishin (who just changed agents), and the suspicion is it’s because the Hurricanes want to see if there’s a three-way available. I mentioned on Monday’s pod that Nikishin is believed to be looking for a $9 million AAV over five years. I had a few sources reach out to say they think that could be lower in the right situation.
St. Louis has been a consistent pursuer, and there are some who are surprised it hasn’t happened. Nashville tried, but wasn’t close enough for what Carolina wants. The Hurricanes were disappointed the Rangers trade didn’t work out and made it clear they would move Nikishin at their own pace. They are motivated now, so we’ll see. Nikishin is a talented player, but has zero leverage under the CBA.
