2026 Hurricanes Off Season Thread

Well, Carlson got traded out of DC in the first place because he stuck to that $10 million ask when the Caps offered him $8 million. So, $8 mil ain’t gonna get there. Not that the Canes didn’t already know that. As usual though, they’ll have their number and stick to it. And if it doesn’t work then they’ll move on to the next one. All they’ll be out is a 6th rounder.

He won the Cup with the Caps in 2018.
 
If we do end up signing Carlson, that could result in Ghost and his $3.2 million cap hit would end up traded somewhere. Ghost has a 15 team no trade list.

The concern I have with that though is that Ghost provides a scoring threat from the point on PP1. John Carlson has never been that PP1 goal scoring threat player. Of course he has been an elite PP passer, although dishing the puck to Alex Ovechkin probably skewed those PP assist numbers.

If we keep Ghost then as I posted earlier, Nikishin is going out and Chatfield can slide down to that 3rd pair spot with Ghost. Slavin/Carlson and Miller/Walker would be the top 2 pairs. I guess one way to look at this is that we would rather pay John Carlson short term big dollars than commit long term big dollars to Nikishin. It also would get us all aligned again with 3 lefty/righty pairs. Plus we would get whatever Nikishin fetches in a trade.

I guess we will find out how it ends up soon.

A lot of transactions for a kid who is destined to never play in the NHL. Is he related to someone in the organization? He played with Stankoven for one season in the WHL.
 
Yeah, who the heck knows? Either way it’s not going to matter (at least for the Cans) but it is certainly a weird turn of events

He was injured for most of the season, which is why he never left ECHL Wichita. So we’ll see if he has the goods to make Chicago or if he’s headed to Greensboro.

Still no qualifying offer, so he’s a free agent as of midnight.
 
Times almost up on John Carlson. If you believe Elliott Friedman, if we really have a bunch of balls in the air, then many of them are probably dependent on what happens with the other ball(s). Could be an interesting day for the Canes, or it could be a completely quiet day....
 
Carlson will get his money/offer from someone, it won't be the Canes though. I don't see him being worth and getting $9-10m.
 
FWIW, Chris Johnston with The Athletic posted something last night indicating that Carolina and Carlson would more than likely get a deal done before the deadline today. Freidman echoed that sentiment, so … we’ll see. Both indicated that Carolina was playing with the term to try and get the AAV down, which is a thing that I hate, but it ain’t my call.
 
Are we really going to go 3 or 4 years (or more?) with Carlson?

One thing to consider...both Ghost and Chatty are entering UFA walk seasons.

Sounds like it … and I’m not a fan.

On Ghost, I see this as a natural off ramp. He’s already struggling to stay healthy and he’ll be a 34 year old power play specialist by this time next year.

Chatfield is trickier. He’s going to want to get a big contract to make up for being under-paid all these years. I’m going to guess his opening ask will be double what he currently makes. Carolina could well lose him because they’ve extracted too much value from the guy. Kind of Pesce 2.0

Martinook and Staal are out of contract next summer too. This next season might well be the last ride with the current veteran group, and I think Tulsky seems to appreciate that. It’s not like your window closes after next season, but Rod will have to build a new leadership group
