2026 Hurricanes Off Season Thread

THAT in a nutshell is why this sport is different. As I only started following it at 40 years old, I had a lot of missed time to catch up on. But damn, I think I just might be getting there!
 
The 2026 team was different. This was NOT 2006. Tulsky brought in perfect fits. Rod brought out the best in them. They all wanted it. They all gave 100%. No other team in the league was that good. No one was going to beat this team 4x. The naysayers can cry all they want. The 2026 Canes were one of the most dominant teams I've ever watched.

BOTH? Yeah, that ain’t happening. But for one of them, you have plenty to play with starting with Nikishin, any number of picks and Nadeau, Legault and Nystrom, all of whom belong on an NHL roster but won’t get there here without some changes ahead of them. And a goalie if it’s Hellebuyck.
 
And again, I think that’s what Tulsky wants to do. Bring in one serious difference maker. I don’t think he wants to break up the core and I don’t think he needs to. But you want to bring in one guy to shake up the mix and add another level of drive.

It seems like Zach would be easier attainable but much less term. And probably the more impacting player.
 
Yeah, I dunno. Werenski would require re-working a lot of stuff and won’t really be a plus defender in Carolina’s system, so you’re probably going to be forced to staple Slavin to him on his off side. He can do that, but it’s limiting. In exchange, you absolutely super charge your breakouts and get better, more consistent PP play from the point. Hellebuyck is one of the best goalies in the league against breakaways … like maybe ever … and that’s the one thing you know you need with how Carolina plays defense. He’s a plug and play upgrade without having to change a single thing. Term-wise, you’re looking at a 2-3 year window and then you’re thinking buyout or move anyway. Both of them kind of get you there in that regard. I could see those as an either/or kind of upgrade.

My wife is from Lake Oswego (Fake Oswego she calls it) and the first time I went out to visit her folks & friends, her father kept telling me; "When it's not raining, we have a great view of Mt. Hood." Trouble was, the entire week we stayed there, it never stopped raining. Having plenty of Dungeness crabs to eat sort of made up for gloomy weather.

In my Wake Forest subdivision, there is a large pond or a lake as it’s called. In the fall, when the trees are bare, we love to say “we have lake view property.” 😂

Glad to hear that Jarvis bit the bullet and finally got that problem shoulder addressed. No telling what it cost him over the past couple of seasons. I'm thinking healing thoughts for both guys. The shine off the Stanley Cup should help healing go smoother for both Seth Jarvis and Eric Robinson.

Jarvis had a torn labrum and rotator cuff since early in the 23-24 season.

With that recovery timeline, he could miss his homecoming trip to Finland.
 
A rotator cuff and labrum are painful surgeries to recover from— bite the bullet it really is. My partner had a torn rotator cuff and had the surgical repair. A second tear and that surgery and rehab aren’t happening.
 
Jarvis was always delaying the inevitable with that shoulder. I’m glad he’s going to actually get it fixed this time. He’s been one decent body check away from playing with one arm for three years now.

Robinson’s surgery sounds pretty basic, with that recovery timeline.

Interesting that (once again) Tulsky is saying that Slavin doesn’t need surgery. I’m almost certain he does, unless he’s playing games with word tense like he did when Slavin obviously had some sort of procedure right before camp opened.
 
FWIW, Aaron Portzline, who covers the Jackets for The Athletic, lists the Canes as 1 of 8 possibilities for Werenski. But he says it might not make sense considering the trade for Carlson’s rights. He says the Canes package starts with Nikishin but the Jackets would like to add forward talent and Jarvis, Stankoven or Blake would be the dream but are probably untouchable. But he goes on to ask if a team can have that many untouchables for a player of Werenski’s caliber.

My take? In puzzling through how they could add Werenski and somebody else (probably Hellebuyck), they hit upon the option of signing Carlson. The acquisition cost is MUCH lower even if the cash cost will probably be higher, but it leaves your asset pile stocked for another move.

And Portzline is correct about how good Weresnki is. He’s just WAY off base about whether or not that impacts winning as much he thinks. Add him to the list of guys who have already forgotten that Carolina just won the Cup. It’s not a short list.
