Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

Early on in his career, Price was rumoured to be a heavy drinker (maybe even cocaine user).

I think a lot of you guys forget that in society at large, men aged 20-35 have a lot of substance issues -- why would players in the NHL be immune to that?

It's not always an evil GM pushing players to the brink.

Maybe....my point is all of us here are already watching a ton of games..despite our disapproval

Most people here only object to ankle slashing when their team is on the receiving end

Prisoners dilemma...

Change the rules of the game though and no we wouldn't be cheering one of our idiots taking 5 and a game for a slash

I haven't been to a Leafs game in a while but the last time I did so, when they played that organizational historical montage before the game, the loudest cheer was for Wendel Clark pounding someone.

Would they be as full if they cut out the needless bullshit? I say yes.

I'd argue more full. The silent majority always prefers more gentlemanly endeavors, even in inherently dangerous sports. F1 over stock cars, euro footy over us football, etc.

Prisoners dilemma. If they're going to not just allow thuggery but promote it, do unto them before they can do unto you.

it’s not in this case, the montage featured plenty of momentous, skilled driven highlights

I suggest you put out a series of videos on Lady Byng Winner's Most Gentlemanly Moments and see if you can outsell this:

Don Cherry is a big part of why hockey caters to the lowest common denominator. But like, what if it didn’t? Would some upstart fanatics start an XHL where just anything goes?

I don't get why so many people act like this is ridiculous. What's actually wrong with scrutinizing an executive for a pattern of verbal abuse and harassment of staff?

Fun fact: 95% of Don's videos were filled with Lady Byng moments...aka, skill. He usually only had 2-3 fights and a short segment with big hits. He would then make fun of some European or Frenchman before showing 2-3 minutes of that european or Frenchman scoring ridiculous goals.

That still misses my point though. I'd never insist that the knuckledraggers don't exist and aren't numerous. What I'm saying is that those who appreciate skill are far more numerous. Wendel isn't Wendel because he was a face puncher. Wendel is Wendel because he could score 40 and still beat the piss out of you. It's the combination of skill and toughness that Toronto gravitates towards, not just toughness. Nobody is showing Colton Orr tribute videos to rousing ovations.

Yeah I'm the first to call out society for some of the "over-correcting" they may do on some issues but seeing consequences for this type of behavior is incredibly positive. It's a huge problem across all walks of life and it is in the fabric of hockey (and yes, other sports) from a very young age. I wouldn't want my kid playing hockey if I felt nothing has changed from when I played. Loved playing the sport but the trauma wasn't worth it and I grew out of loving it at a very early age as a result. I wasn't alone in that either so it's not because I wasn't "tough" enough at 9 years old.

Twas a joke. But I will say that one of the best things about old-time hockey was big hits. I don't miss fighting but I do miss this. And skill has always been a part (the best part) of the game, and it not what makes someone a "lady byng" candidate.

Bob Murray resigns, entering alcohol abuse program.

Very much doubt this is strictly an alcohol issue here, but i guess there is no such thing as a human garbage reformation center.
