Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

I love that you have taken to Ritchie.
Watching him from afar was always funny to me but it took awhile to appreciate the comedic element he brings when he plays for my team.

So yes I've warmed up to him because this team is so good that it can get a little boring without some comedic relief.

Most of us including me wanted Bonino over Kampf. Based on how these fellas have played we were wrong. Of the options available at 3c Kampf probably tops my list.

Yeah, I was team Bonino as well. I'm willing to accept that Kampf was a better choice than some of the other players available at that price point (though spending the savings on Mimsy continues to be a head scratcher, but whatever). But that doesn't necessarily make him a good or ideal 3C.

I'd like to see some of the public models updated take on Kampf. GVSA seems to think he's less than ideal. Jfresh wasn't high on him at the time of signing.

Maybe you are just incapable of identifying good defensive play

I dont even mean this as a dig, but like the backchecking of a C isnt exactly something one looks out for on the regular, let alone knows how to identify.

If you dont notice your checking C chances are nothing exciting is happening on his shifts and he's doing his job.
I'm not necessarily disagreeing. But I think I notice the backchecking and good defensive play quite well. For instance, Matty and really the other core 4 are constantly doing it and it's very noticeable. I see Kampf, and often I'm like, okay, good play, and sometimes I see odd decisions and think hm, maybe he's not so defensively capable. As I said, don't know what to really make of him.

Mimsy was the only dud this offseason for me and I said so at the time. And I fully recognize that he has suffered from hilariously bad luck. But regardless he wasn't necessary.
You did call it. I was quite bullish about it because I thought how could we go wrong with taking on a former high draft pick who just scored 15 goals? It's still absurd, and I have to believe he finds a way to get to decent numbers the rest of the way.

I think you overrate yourself.

Again, not a dig

( when it's a dig you'll know you sexist, racist, bland sandwich lover)

Better to be a bland sandwich lover than an indiscriminate all sandwich lover!

Since when do you discern between one food over another? What a shift.

I like their hamburgers as a normal person should

I don't Jazz myself over yhe bland unseasoned menu item that only exists for bubble people allergic to everything

I mean it wasn't a difficult call. He's despised by his fans wherever he goes and has never been able to comfortably hold a top six spot at evens because he drags stars down (he has gotten a lot of opportunity up there which have helped his raw totals a bit). He scored a third of his goals last year on the top pp unit when Pastrnak was out. Which fine.. he can play with elite talent in Toronto too... But I don't think he's a 15 goal guy without top pp unit reps in any world. He's more of a third or fourth line guy that can put up 20-25 points.

To put it into context... Everyone so excited about the shiny new toy forgets that he has been a worse 5 on 5 point producer per 60 than our boy Engvall in the last several years. So this lack of production isn't surprising despite the bad luck.

He's been unlucky somewhat, but he's also played like a guy who looks like he's capable of 5 goals at best. Not encouraging.

How many possible ways could you spend $4 million better than Dubas did on Kampf, Kase and Bunting? Literal genius work in the bargain bin.

Mrazek/Mimsy have some money to earn.

I'd be incomplete/tbd on Kase (though most of us would have taken the under on 20 games before his first injury...so that's positive) and to a lesser degree Kampf. Kampf is fine as a signing. Still way up in the air if signing him as our 3C turns out to be the right move.
Kase is also now our RFA next year, which I don't think should be understated. But yes, he needs to demonstrate that he can stay on the ice, and his kamikaze style is not really encouraging in that regard.

I'm not confident he's capable of much more than that unless he's shoehorned into a top six role with lots of pp minutes. But if he fills a role that he should fill (3rd/4th line lw) 5-10 goals 20-25 points is who he is. Engvall produces as well or better than him at evens despite having far worse linemates over the years. It's not great and if you looked deep enough it never has been great.

He's been shoehorned with two of the most productive players in the NHL and...has produced nothing.

And Engvall is an infinitely better player. The only thing he has in common is a lack of touch.
