sometimes teams can overachieve. but it's pretty tough to keep doing that season after season. too many variables involved.

They aren't and they are very old. To overacheieve 2 straight years is actually terrific in this era. I looked up and so many guys in their 30's have so much term, Bailey, Palmieri, Cizikas, Martin, Lee, Nelson. Bailey and Palmieri have 2 goals combined.They can't rebound with that core. They need to find away to ditch those contracts and rebuild. lou's like 80 though. With a new building this is horrible timing. His leash might be short given they need to sell tickets.

What was scary to me was that while the first two years of overachieveing they were just an ultra defensive team with middling nerdies and great goaltending, last year they somehow turned themselves into a top-5 nerdie team.
Must have been some divisional fluke.
Anyways, the last two years look more and more asterisk worthy as time goes on.

For a while there, it was the Leafiest shit ever that we finally lured a hometown star here in his prime as a free agent, and the shitstain disaster of a franchise he left behind (led by the GM we’d just given walking papers to) somehow went on to have more success than us in the following years.
So, excellent to see the Islanders finally turn back into a pumpkin. Hopefully this is just the start of what’ll eventually turn into a long rebuild to dig their way out of Lou’s mess.
