Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

Winnipeg is 1-2-1 since winning their stanley cup, despite playing the 12th & 15th placed team in the west, as well as the 13th placed team in the east over those 4 games. Should have been an easy 3-1 or 2-1-1 for a good team (Carolina was the other game).

But once you've reached the top of the mountain, I completely see how it would be difficult to continue to stay motivated.

I think you have to think about competitive integrity though so at the very least bring back taxi squads??

But if protocol is only the players missing a couple games before clearance....I think they power through unless they start actually getting sick.

It would be a fascinating study to see how bad athletes get it. Hope someone is tracking it. I know with delta quite a few breakthroughs resulted in nightmare illnesses but it would be interesting to see proportions.

I just think it's a tough sell to shut it down unless these players are actually sick, not just positive.

I think this is probably true.

It's also a tough sell when this league and about 80% of the teams are based out of the United States and the US has been carrying on like the pandemic is over for a good long while now, and they're not going to reverse course on that under any circumstance.

And to be fair to the US, in Canada too I feel like the support for going back to the lockdowns and restrictions strategy is at an all-time low.

Then toss in the owners hurting financially, and the players for the most part likely not having any interest in handing any more of their salary back into escrow or playing in anything resembling the "bubble" again, and they're likely going to just power through as best they can.

The only thing that might prompt a league-wide shutdown is if a prominent player tests positive and then gets deathly ill.

Players are motivated to play given the escrow situation. If guys were getting really sick I think the PA would step in.
