Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

Isn’t it better this way than actually guaranteeing those extra dollars?
For ownership.

if you exceed the cap making bonus payments (and you can only exceed it by a fixed amount without incurring penalties) then you lose the same amount in cap space the following season.

So, in all likelihood, Boston is accounting for those bonus payments under this year’s cap, which means they won’t spend to the cap.

not really - in this case the bonuses are contingent on things which aren't really in question of happening - Bergeron's bonus depends on him playing 10 games. So it's not guaranteed but....it's guaranteed.

well they're already at the cap with Zacha still to be paid (going to arby at the moment) so they'll have to ditch some significant salaries to get even part of those bonuses under this year's cap.

I knew that, but I was saying Boston is better off doing what they did. For one, if they exceed the cap this year due to players meeting bonuses, they'd be happy because they basically have a window of like 1-2 years with this current roster, and that means the players are performing as expected to take that run. And if they fail to meet those bonus thresholds this year, then Boston isn't on the hook for the guaranteed money they'd otherwise have paid, and they can add more players with the free cap room they have.

It's like if the Leafs signed Matty to a $12M contract. If it's an $8M contract with the chance for performance to bump it another $4M, I'd take that, even if bonuses could bump it to $13M. That means he'll have earned every penny, and if he doesn't because he somehow underperformed or got injured, then we have $4M to spend on other players.

That detail I didn't know. Unless there's some real reason why they should expect Bergeron to not play 10 games, I don't understand the reason for doing that.

Caveat:

- McAvoy likely out until December
- Marchand likely out until December
- Grzelcyk likely out until November

Kadri back to Avs you guys think?

Hm, looks like David Pagnotta is saying 7 year deal with the Isles is just waiting to be finalized.

Waiting for what? I've never seen anything take so long.

Usually a team wants to open up space to sign someone, they quickly find a taker for something and add him.

There's something more going on here.

That was reported over a week ago by multiple sources. Lou is apparently being Lou about it.

Or it’s complete bunk.

I'm going with door #2.

He may well sign with NYI in the end, but I don't believe anything is done and they're just waiting for Lou to move players out.

I don’t buy the theory that Kadri already has a contract agreed to with the Isles and is just waiting patiently for them to clear cap space.

That’d be a hell of a risk for a player to take, since there’d be nothing to hold the Isles to that agreement if they got cold feet or were unable to clear the space.

Then in the meantime, other teams would move on with other plans and further reduce your options.

I think Kadri and his agent have probably set a minimum term/AAV that they’re willing to accept, and they’re still waiting for someone to meet that price.

Most plausible.

Lou being a weirdo about these things historically doesn’t help either
