Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

I don’t buy the theory that Kadri already has a contract agreed to with the Isles and is just waiting patiently for them to clear cap space.

That’d be a hell of a risk for a player to take, since there’d be nothing to hold the Isles to that agreement if they got cold feet or were unable to clear the space.

Then in the meantime, other teams would move on with other plans and further reduce your options.

I think Kadri and his agent have probably set a minimum term/AAV that they’re willing to accept, and they’re still waiting for someone to meet that price.
They probably have an offer on the table and will take it should nothing else materialize.

I still think Kadri is waiting to see if Colorado can clear space.

At this point, no matter where he goes, I don't think we're seeing a 7 year and $8/9M contract.

The market has to have cooled considerably. Certain teams went with other options. Those that remain aren't under any pressure to go nuts anymore.

If you're a UFA, you need to capitalize on the frenzy within the first day or two.

Kadri is probably going through the same thing Klingberg went through before he axed his agent.

They would want to trade out E.Johnson, who at $6m to be a 4/5 guy is obviously way too much. But it would cost them and they don't have many good picks left.

They could trade Girard for value maybe. Though he's probably more important to the team than anything they would get in a trade.

Bingo

That was unlikely to ever happen regardless of his agent or his impulse to sign early in the UFA process -- Kadri will be 32 before the puck drops this coming season.

I could see Lou signing him for way too long though, perhaps not 7 but he's not shy about signing lesser players well into their 30s.

I don't see Kadri wanting to go to the island for anything less than 7 years though. I'm sure he can get shorter deals elsewhere.

Me thinks Sakic offered a Taylor Hall 4x 6ish contract and was turned down

Joe then finished his retool with Lek, Nich, Georgiev, and Mason with available cap funds

There's no way they weren't resigning Lehkonen regardless. Sakic was after him for two years and Barron is a decent D prospect to give up.

I bet there were at least 1-2 offers in that range on day one. Well aware of his age, but there’s always 1-2 desperate teams that have the space and want to make a splash and he was primed to be that guy who lands the dumb contract after a much publicized performance in a cup win.

I think he got selective with the teams, or held out for that extra million or extra year. There’s no way he had no big offer to start out.

Has islanders written all over it. They still have to resign Dobson and Romanov, and may have to move a contract. Lou announced everything on the same day after it was done last offseason.

Agreed

Joe had a budget to work with and players were departing

It probably came down to paying Nich or retaining Kadri , while keeping an eye on future contracts for Nate and others
