Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

The $0 cap hit help the rebuilding teams as much as they would help the contenders. Cap space would be weaponized by 1 year deals for vets with the intention of moving them after Jan 1.
Not really. It still benefits rich clubs more.

There’s always the option for teams to leave a $1M of cap space unused for the betterment of team health.

A lot of NHL teams cut it waaaaay too close.

Allow a taxi squad that does not affect cap. Cap must be maintained while rostered but doesn't count on taxi.

Sort of like practice squad for NFL

You’d have to re-jig the waiver system too.

Because the only real benefit of the Covid-era taxi squad was to keep those extra players close at-hand. But because waiver-eligible players still had to pass through waivers to get shuffled back and forth between the regular roster and the taxi squad, it didn’t really make it any easier to give regular players nights off.

For example, when the Leafs wanted to move Spezza onto the taxi squad temporarily, that meant they had to put Spezza through waivers. Then they were faced with losing him and Spezza was faced with being forced to leave the only team he wanted to play for.

Maybe the thing to do is give players with a certain amount of experience the right to choose to be waiver-exempt for the taxi squad.

Ray Ferraro and Dregs are all over this, and they really make a solid argument. keep a call up squad of three guys all making under 1 million in salary that you can use whenever a player is injured so that you don't play short even for one game. It's so stupid

I think you might get more pushback from the players than the owners on that one.

They don't want to be stuck in taxi squad limbo.

the reason waiver rules are so harsh nowadays is so that players don't get stuck in an organization when other teams might want them.

About the arizona thing...

The leafs always has every team that comes in planning for weeks on how to stop the leafs.. and matthews and marner now. Plus all of their toronto boys play their goddamn best against the leafs. A buddy of mine coached McBain from the yotes and talked to him before hand and that's all these players want to do is beat the leafs.

Look at the shit show that was the Jets... I LOVED that the crowd was all leaf fans.

Teams try their absolute best against the leafs and then play the habs or the sens and don't give two shits about their opponents and of course suck crap. Hell, even the coaches probably don't have any major scouting reports on the team.. just go out there and try your best boys.

That's why last years cringefest of the jets celebrating their victory against the leafs was just a glimpse of the preparation teams have against the leafs.
What it does do though, is that it basically makes every leaf game have a playoff vibe.... teams preparing their players to shut down matthews and marner.

Difference this year is our defense is better and our goaltending is better.

After seeing xG declare the Leafs the winners of several consecutive playoff series that they have in fact lost, I’m all for any nerd that wants to take a big dump on the usefulness of that stat.

So, go Cam!

those series they also "won" the actual goals battle, too.

I find it interesting how pretty much every year, straight out of the gate there are 1-2 teams that absolutely just shit the bed harder and smellier than anyone really could've reasonably expected. That the Nucks are the slaughterhouse meat this year is fascinating.
