Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

Back in October Bettman said they thought escrow would be paid off this year and the cap would rise by 4 million for 2023-2024 but now it seems we'll see that increase in 2024-2025 instead.

October's article: "If the escrow debt is not repaid by the end of this season, the salary cap would rise $1 million next season and instead increase significantly for the 2024-25 season, when the debt would be fully paid off."

I gotta say, I no longer get much of any joy in watching hockey fights.

When I was younger, my inner neanderthal fucking loved watching grown men on skates bareknuckle box (of course being oblivious to the long-term health impacts).

Aside from the obvious long-term health implications, the other new development is that basically everyone in the league wears a visor now. So even if you do 'land' punches, most often you're just punching a piece of hard plastic. Idiotic. And it is illegal to remove helmets before fighting and obviously you want them to protect your head.

So what's the damn point anymore? For it to be a 'fun' thing to watch, you need to get rid of visor-punching, imo. But to do that, you have to deliberately risk the health of your players for what is literally an illegal sideshow to the actual game itself.

Moral of the story, time to get rid of fighting. Or, fully embrace our neanderthalic roots and at least make it entertaining again by doing something about visors (which, for the record, is dumb, but I prefer it to the current shit)
Most of them were staged fights and Don Cherry tried to brainwash us how special it was. I guess it makes hockey unique, but what is the point exactly?

Fights in the heat of the moment. Fine. Staged fights. Boring.

But they are pretty much fading themselves out anyway.

which is fine for us, right? cause that is when Matty/Willy expire

eh fights in the heat of the moment are basically dudes swinging wildly to punch plastic. or, if they can avoid the plastic, to cause brain injury. I dunno, I am just over them.

franchise values do keep ticking upwards... and he has expanded the league, record setting profits.

he's a weasel and all, but his constituents ought to be thrilled with what he has done for them.

Doesn't bother me either. I don't notice them. I was mostly laughing at Bettman saying it makes watching hockey more enjoyable.

Yeah but everyone says that yet is the NHL closer to any of the other big sports prior to him taking over in 1992?
