This trade is weird...

The 10th place team in the conference trades for an expiring 2nd line centre? Vancouver takes on a protected 1st and a 3rd liner making 4.15 for this season and next (before expiring as a UFA).

What is the point for either of them? Surely Vancouver could have gotten a slightly lesser 1st rounder but with other assets that will actually be useful in a rebuild?

Fwiw, Aatu Raty is a 20 yr old centre putting up .6ish ppg in the AHL this season after a near PPG season in Liiga at 19. So he's not a non prospect.

This makes a bit more sense now for Vancouver I guess. Which means that it makes less sense for NYI unless they're intent on having every bad contract in the league once they sign Horvat to his pending 8x8 extension.
