Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

Stamkos' huge year last year seems a thing of the past. As is Perry turning the 4th line into a threat.

Hagel has stepped up which I guess fills in for Palat but then nobody is filling in for Hagel on the 3rd line, and Paul's surge last year is gone too.

Point and Kuch are still killing it but otherwise their offense is looking pretty tame.

and while Cole/Perbix are decent they're not quite what McD/Rutta were.

Vasi played really well this game but they still got soundly outplayed and couldn't produce many chances.

of course, they could turn it up at any time so none of this matters really.

Even if they do turn it up they're not gonna suddenly replace what McDonagh brought and Hagel's 3rd line presence last year ain't being replicated. But yes it's possible that Paul and Perry pick it up come playoffs.

Fuck the refs btw. Brutal call.

But Jeannot

31 goals for Hyman.

Fuck I hate the salary cap.
Cap needed to happen. I'm sure fans of the top revenue teams would prefer a luxury tax setup. I don't think that'll work for parity (even though the parity comes from questionable officiating).

I would like a franchise tag where a single player can make up to 15% of the cap but it doesn't count against the cap. I think most teams would love that. Sign Matthews but have his 15m a year not count against cap.

Could work.

Now you're getting into MLS level or rules.

That would fuck up the salary structure even more

Marner, but yes, like that idea.

Not the cap's fault we're paying Murray and Kerf instead.

We would hate this version of Hyman ( despite the offensive bump)

The Oilers fans who track him closely say Drai has rubbed off on him and he has no interest in playing the other 100ft anymore. Bought into his own hype

(Dirty secret about Hyman is that he was always like that.)

Of course, the hot streak is probably over for him now - over his last 20+ gms he's back down to his usual 20/60 type pace.

There are few players worthy of a franchise tag

Many teams dont have that player and agents will lick their chops to have a designated player make stupid money only to get their next client overpaid

The NHL is by far the hardest sport to manage your cap/roster and gives you the least margin of error

Simply put stop handing out shit contracts , the cap system is fine to make 20+ players millionaires

When you are stupid enough to hand out 17 to Gally and Price you deserve cap headaches at some point

Caps are artificial limits, that will always be a problem in a league with haves and have-nots.

It's great to get a league going maybe if every team is starting out from the same place...but sports is literally based on the reward system, so why then do we take away rewards, like fervent fan-bases with money...

It does the opposite. Most teams will have a 10m+ player soon. You create a hard franchise tag number. Say $12m. If Toronto signs Matthews to $15m they can franchise tag him and only $3 mil would count against the cap.

Meanwhile other middle of the row teams can use the exemption for their top players and have room to add at deadline is they're having a good year. There are surprise teams every year.

The bottom feeders are irrelevant. I don't believe in catering to the lowest common denominator. Most teams are average and this system helps them as well. The NHLPA would obviously agree to it.
