Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

This is what the NHL wants for expansion in the sunbelt. This is what they want. Finesse? Regular season only.

"playoff hockey" same as it ever was

it's hard to model hits negating above expected goals

truth be told, most people also leave their seats for brass tacks in sophisticated markets such as Toronto and Montreal

there's a reason why guys like Tie Domi and Chris Nilan are still mini celebrities

What are you gonna do, it's a legal hit. It sucks that players hit to injure sometimes though, and that's what that was.

An "intent to injure" penalty would be a good add for the league. Maybe it gets an automatic suspension. And if you rack up two or three of those in a year, the punishment is severe, like suspended for 5 games or something like that.

it's hard to determine "intent" but yeah, I agree, you hate to see that lack of respect players sometimes have for their opponents

Tkachuk could reasonably claim that he was using his shoulder to target Eichel's shoulder

Feels like the players have adapted a bit. Not long ago a hit like that was guaranteed to be an illegal as fuck headshot. Now, it's still intent to injure because why else would you do that, but most of these hits appear to be within the rules.

Note: I say this with little conviction. I have no data to back this up as this is entirely anecdotal.

I do think that particular hit is a hard one to punish.

He went at him head on, Eichel kinda had lots of time to look up and see him, and it was shoulder to shoulder as the initial point of contact.

But Tkachuk also has a rep, and he would've probably had 1-2 of those during the year.

Maybe you distinguish between them with minor and major intent to injure penalties. But this shit would be carried like a badge, just like the diving penalty, and would build into a reputation. It should force the more aggressive players to rein themselves in a bit.

the idea that vegas and florida are bruising teams is hilarious.

Leafs didn't get outphysicalled by the panthers.
