Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

of course we don't actually have to trade him.

we have loads of capspace as long as we can dump Murray.

we can re-sign the whole playoffs team again likely with plenty of change left over.

Treliving gets a statue in the square if he can figure out how to convince Tavares' AI to leave Toronto. good luck now that he has 2 little kids here.

Here's where this doesn't make complete sense to me.

What is he going to do in 2 years? Sign here at a steep discount?

Leaving Toronto isn't really his choice 24 months from now.

it is his choice now, though. Some people are happy where they are, it's his favourite team and a Cup contender. He doesn't need to leave for money or a better chance to win.

if I were him I would much rather play here the next 2 years than anywhere else too. That's why people get NMC's.

No question he would prefer to play here. That doesn't mean that he'll absolutely refuse to waive his nmc no matter what.

they can ask and he might change his mind, absolutely.

i think it's more likely they don't ask, and if they do he says no.

It happens all the time. Not sure why we think Tavares would be especially stubborn that he'd choose to tank the team's chances against their wishes. It's not like the Leafs haven't treated him very well.

Like if he had taken some cheapo discount deal to play here because it meant so much to him that he play here, then sure I could see him just refusing to waive. But he's made more money than almost every single player in hockey in his time here.

well, if you think the Leafs are going to try and publicly embarrass their captain into breaking his NMC, it is possible I guess. I'm just saying it's unlikely.

If they quietly ask, are you willing to move, he would probably say i'd rather not.

it certainly wouldn't be fair to ask him to go to Arizona. If a contending club makes a legit offer for him, he could conceivably say yes. That team can also see his contract, though.

just get a #2C, move him to the wing and be done with it.

why would they publicly embarass him?

they would present him with the trade options, explain to him exactly why they feel they need to do it for the best for the team, and ask him, man to man, if he would waive the NMC.
