Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

Seriously, I'm thrilled with the Habs inept drafting

this:

Roy-Cooley-Michkov
Newhook-Suzuki-Caufield
Dach

Guhle

Is a legitimately concerning rebuild. Though I'm probably higher on Josh Roy than even most Habs fans. Elite production in a fake junior league is meh, but he's jumped to PPG++ in the AHL at 20 and that's eye opening if he keeps that up.

Michkov. Yes. Rush proof.

Cooley. I didn't see anyone thinking Cooley at 1. They also would have rushed Cooley anyway.

Fair enough, sub in the guy who was the consensus #1 then, Shane Wright. Still a significantly better prospect than Slaf imo.

With that said, it was a meh draft and that's what you spend the millions of dollars on. 3-4 kids at the top of the draft that everyone thinks are similarish in outcome, it should be more than luck dictating whether you walk with the best of the bunch when you've got the #1.

I actually don't mind the theory in the Slaf pick. Go for the homerun swing. Hoped he would be the international version but it appears he is the league play version.

That said I wanted Wright and hoped that him plateauing was just a covid thing.

I'd trade Allen for Campbell (salary retained to balance the salary) for unprotected first rounder.

I don't think the home run was ever there. We've seen lots of "Slaf's" happen before when a big young kid does some stuff in a single tournament or for a short period of time (playoff run, etc) and is otherwise somewhere between meh & ass. It's Puljujarvi, Paarjarvi-Svensson, Ritchie, etc. Shit, even when it works out you get a Nino Niedereiter, Zacha or a Nichushkin. Not a star.

I had Wright or Nemec as the best players at the #1 at the time personally. Wright is going to be good. Not elite #1C good, but probably a #1C regardless. Something between what would have happened if Edmonton didn't ruin young RNH and a Tyler Seguin.

At least.

He might not be dumpable at all. That's roughly the going rate for dumping 1 year of that kind of salary. 3 years left? Edmonton might have to eat 2 million for someone to take it for a 1st & 3rd

It cost a 1st just to dump one year of $6M Patty Marleau. So a 1st & 3rd for four years of $5M sad Jack seems like a pretty lowball estimate.
