Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

It’s no dive. He trips over his leg.

But his leg made the save and then Stutzle tripped over it. First, he has to be allowed to make that save regardless of who trips over him. Second, his leg gets the puck first so it should be legal, just like how a poke check hitting the puck first and then tripping the guy is legal.

I am a fervent believer that they keep the shoddy refereeing on purpose.

"Parity"

One of the absolute most important things to Bettman is definitively artificially-enforced parity.

It’s why the standings and points system are the way they are, it’s one of the main goals of the salary cap system and it’s why “game management” by the referees exists.

But there isn't parity in the standings.

That doesn't mean the league doesn't attempt to maintain parity. Bettman is on record many times talking about how important it is for the league because so many of the teams are gate driven and being out of the playoffs by December is bad for business.

Doesn't take a significant leap from there to assume/believe that it's a guiding principle in decisions they make everywhere within the business.

There would a lot more parity of more than a third of the league had a data driven approach. But they don't. So the good organizations continue to lap the field.
