Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

All kind of depends on how the next 2.5 years go. If his decline continues from this barely playable point, he might be completely cooked before the end of this contract. You can only wheel someone out for so long regardless of what you hope they can do once they're on the ice. Cooked is cooked.

For this kind of record and with him being so close, they might go to ridiculous lengths. Like keeping him on essentially as a PP specialist if it comes down to it.

The fact that they’ll likely be in a rebuild also makes it easier to get away with that.

Knowing OV, he's had moments of looking cooked before, not like this, but still. It'd be no surprise to me if he goes on a tear out of nowhere.

Ovechkin is holding the Caps hostage until he gets the record a la Barry Bonds.

Did Bonds really hold them hostage though? Over his last 2 seasons he put up a 146 & 157 wRC+. He was still an elite middle of the lineup bat and even with his trash defence was a 3+ WAR player in both seasons.

Ovy might be cooked. He's been a bad power play merchant this year. If this is him going forward he's unplayable, and it won't be a matter of playing time and opportunity to get the goals, but ability.

There is zero chance Barry couldn't have hung on with say, Oakland ( or any AL team) as a DH for 2-3 years if he wasn't blackballed by MLB, and been a top 2 DH no less

Yeah, Bonds was still probably a top-5 hitter in baseball in his last year.

But if he wasn’t close to the record, he probably would have been blackballed earlier.

Bonds offered to play for anyone for the league minimum the next year and all the teams said no.

Makes sense, with the Phil-whisperer Rick Tocchet working as Vancouver’s head coach.

You have to hand it to Phil—he really must love the game. Three Cups, oodles of money and he already has the all-time ironman record. No other real reason for him to keep playing on cheap contracts, except for genuinely enjoying it.
8 points away from 1000. He'll probably pack it in after he gets there. Hopefully he gets a long enough chance.

Yeah, you might be right. Didn’t realize he was that close to that milestone.

He might also pad his ironman streak a bit more too. I can’t imagine Vancouver will play him every game the rest of the way, but as long as he plays the next game after signing his NHL deal, any additional consecutive games he plays from that point will count towards the streak.
