Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

Yeah Kappy and Johnson looked very promising and there was no justification for sacrificing one or both to keep 40 year old Marleau around for another year. Plus their speed helped make us the super fast team that we were once upon a time. Super leafy that they both became poop right after.
Of course there was justification - they both got paid life changing contracts and were mediocre players who needed to be traded a year later.

Last 2 years Skinner is 9th in GP, 11th in sv% and 8th in GSAx though. He’s put up similar numbers to Oettinger.
But the point is Edmonton did not invest in a goalie! They just focused on being a dominant juggernaut and the rest fell into place! Oettinger doesn't make much either. Optimizing your skaters should always be priority #1. Leafs have not done that yet throughout this entire cores existence.

How soon you forget their sizeable investment in Jack Campbell

Yup, some of us having been saying this for a while. We had (have) some of the best offensive players out there…accompanied by some of the worst offensive players out there. That’s not balance. That’s half your roster just being shit, too much for the other players to carry.

Go all out offense, and if you can get some good two way players in the mix, that’s the ideal.

The biggest difference between the Leafs and Oilers is they have two of the best dmen on the league and one of the best goalies and we have none of those.

Hard to name a single forward or d that immediately became an ahler the year they signed a 5+ year 5+ million dollar contract. This happens far too often with goalies! Not an investment worth making when you can't even be confident that he'll outperform a league min guy or a guy like Woll. Only a few goalies out there that I'd fully trust and they'd all cost 7-8+ on the open market.

That and their stars are way better in the playoffs.

But other than that…

“If only we had Fogele and Nurse instead of Domi and McCabe!!”

they also haven't won squat as of yet....and there's a real risk everything will fall out of place if they can't re-up Draisatl.
