Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

Now would be a good time to post this I guess....

I'm just going to use Quant's cutoff because I can't be fucking bothered to sort this myself right now:

19 yr old KHL Season PPG:

Kaprizov: .86
Michkov: .85
Kuznetsov: .84
Buchnevich: .60
Demidov: .56
Grebenkin: .50

Robertson = Caufield
Knies = Slafkovsky
Grebenkin = Demidov
I mean Demidov did make the team that michkov was unable to.

Was at the game last night. Michkov was much better defensively than advertised (outside of the OT of course).

What team did Demidov make that Michkov didn't? Michkov made the KHL a year younger than Demidov did....

St Petersburg

Michkov got loaned from a top team to a bottom team. Demidov can't get loaned (last year of his contract).

Using PPG is a bit of an odd in the KHL. Because if we use it for Demidov as an example you'd have to remove the games he never actually played because he was the 13th forward. I'm sure that happened with others as well.

lol, that's a pretty tenuous point to make...

Michkov also got loaned in his 17 yr old KHL season and put up .74ppg

That's part of being a young player in the KHL, yeah. 16 minutes one night, 6 the next. 2nd line LW for a week, end of the bench for a week. The trend line is pretty simple though, Michkov appears to be a year ahead of Demidov in age controlled development. That doesn't mean Demidov can't catch up, but it's pretty clear at this point Michkov was ready for the KHL at 17, a top line type player at 18 and now looks to be at minimum capable of taking a top 6 shift in the NHL at 19.

I'd argue it is happening right now.
But I think we can all agree that Reinbacher over Michkov was the right call...

Demidovs start has to be super disappointing. He is being way out played by Artamonov.

His production is more in the Tarasenko, Buchnevich, Chicakov range than the kaprizoc, Michkov range.

Long season though. Only 15 games.

Definitely hasn't been disappointing. When he has played (not the 13th forward) he has been ppg.

Eh, I'd be pretty disappointed. An 18 yr old top prospect in the KHL should be a key player, not at the end of the bench.

I mean, you can't spin Michkov's performance as a 17-18 yr old playing for Sochi because they were bad so he played a lot and then get pumped about Demidov being "PPG in games his coach trusted to put him into" when the 4 point game making his numbers even look passable right now was against Sochi....

This isn't much different than other Euro kids go through trying to crack the lineup of top teams in their league at 17-18. Barkov, Laine, Puljujarvi, Heiskanen, Fiala, Dahlin were feature players on top teams before or during their D+1 season. Guys like Nylander, Rantanen, Kaprizov were key players on bad teams. All that seemed to matter in the end was how they performed. Guys who put up good age relative numbers went on to be good in the NHL, guys who didn't, didn't. Not perfectly linear of course, development doesn't work like that. There's nothing wrong with Demidov's performance so far this season, his comparable is someone like Tarasenko....I'd fucking take that. I don't think he's the star you guys are hoping for though.

I honestly don't know how he will turn out. Season is still early.

On the flip side he has greatly out performed kucherov in the MHL and KHL. Not just matched. Greatly outperformed. And no i don't expect him to be that good.

Kucherov was a weirdo late bloomer though. Even his D+2 QMJHL numbers don't jump off the page. His closest comparables there are Sprong, Desharnais, Comtois, Talbot, & 1 good one in Giroux.

I don't know if comparing a top 5 pick's development to a late blooming 2nd rounders development is worthwhile here.

Happens a bunch with Russians though... Krill, panarin. Which is why I don't put as much stock in ppg khl stats as say the OHL.

....That's not a bunch though. That's a couple of outliers over a few decades worth of sample.

Fwiw, I've never seen a reason to not treat KHL stats and performance different than Liiga or SHL. They're all similar quality leagues overall, with pretty similar approaches to developing young players....in that they don't give a fuck about developing young players. You're either good enough to play for them today to help them win, or you're not. They're professional leagues, not dev leagues.
