Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

here's the thing - the nerd in carolina definitely made a good move for his team this year. he won the trade.

but is he actually going to sign Rantanen?

Who knows, but they got likely the best player at the deadline 2 years in a row and didn’t have to give up any 1sts or top prospects.

they don’t even like Necas.

So I took Mindz' advice and checked out Rantanen's wowys re MacKinnon.

3yrs 5v5

Rants With Mack: 2549:16, 59.7gf%, 55.6xgf%, 57.2cf%
Rants W/O Mack: 782:22, 42.9gf%, 42.8xgf%, 44.7cf%
Mack W/O Rants: 840:01, 60.8gf%, 55.2xgf%, 55.2cf%

Don’t worry. They missed their window to trade him, and Mitch won’t waive his NMC.

Now he’ll either walk for nothing, or the Leafs will cave and overpay him to an absolutely hideous degree.
You can always trade his rights for something before he walks if that's the path taken.

for comparison

Matthews With Marner: 1652:01, 59.3gf%, 56.8xgf%, 55.5cf%
Matthews W/O Marner: 1107:55, 64.4gf%, 56.1xgf%, 52.2cf%
Marner W/O Matthews: 885:04, 61.0gf%, 49.8xgf%, 50.3cf%

hmm actually surprised by that dip from Marner in xgf% without matthews. That's probably heavily concentrated in Mitch's poor overall year last year, though, and still nothing remotely as significant as that Rantanen dip without MacKinnon.

Friedman says 11.75 was the offer, but that's a pretty shitty deal imo. I don't care if it makes him the highest paid winger. Panarin signed his deal 6 years ago. It's way lower by cap %.

The Avs made the anti-Leafs move refusing to pay their 3rd best player a top 10 salary so they could afford depth. We'll see who wins first.

It will be interesting. Friedman had a good point about "Internal caps". NHL has a lot of "Have-nots" and there will be teams doing this just because they can't afford to offer their stars a fair deal. I don't think Gary has ever liked having the cap soar, because he knows the state of the majority of teams. Arizona blunder kept the cap low.
We might see more stars being traded in the future.

BTW it is kind of funny NHL owners LOVE getting that expansion $ and do that more than owners in any other league. Yet they seem upset when the cap goes up...
What do they think will happen when they accept Houston and Atlanta's $ and they enter the NHL?

Lock out the players for a year or two and grind the union down?
