Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

If someone told Marchand that nobody outside of Boston likes him, his eyes would light up and his shit-eating grin would become a threat to National Security.

Yikes. 28-point pace in his rookie season, and a 45-point pace during his sophomore season last year.

Going 8X8 on him now is one hell of a gamble.
If you're going to gamble on a guy... an ultra talented guy like Hughes isn't the worst bet. That deal could look bad, but it could also look incredible in a couple years.

I dunno. On the surface it is a tame comment for someone to get set off by.

But with context, he’s making fun of the guy because he publicly went against his country’s murderous dictator, and his home country is no longer safe for him or his family now as a result.

Maybe this makes me “soft”, but that seems extraordinarily shitty to me.

Nah, you're good. Marchand is a hockey bro and a douche. The context is over his head.

Also 8 million isn't really a big cap hit anymore for someone you project as a front line player and if he breaks out as the cap increases in the next few years, that will look pretty hilarious.

He is made of glass , but hope he turns it around .

Nico is already looking like a bust , Jack needs to emerge or Jersey is going nowhere

I guess my issue is that he hasn’t really shown he’s “ultra talented” at the NHL level yet. Or at least, his scoring totals don’t even come close to reflecting it.

This feels less like MacKinnon’s second contract, where at least he had a couple of 25-goal/60+ point pace seasons under his belt, and more like the Clayton Keller contract, where they’re paying in full almost entirely for pure potential.

And now, time for our regularly scheduled Freddie Andersen update. Carolina outshot Dallas tonight by a 40-16 margin, but lost 4-1. Fred with a sweet .812 SV% on the night.

Fred’s now lost three in a row, and has an .886 SV% over his last four starts. Is this Fred gearing up for the regularly scheduled end of Frovember?

Or is Carolina’s terrible defense entirely to blame for hanging poor Fred out to dry? After all, you can’t expect to give up 16 whole shots and have your goalie give you a chance to win!

Out of curiosity, I had a look at the Canes GDT here and on HF, and it looks like the overwhelming majority of Canes fans are, in fact, blaming their defense.

“Lucky goals”. “He was screened”. “The chances we gave up were high danger.”

Poor bastards. They’ll learn.

The 1st goal was a Freddy special, where he did just enough for a casual to not blame him for it. Wrister from the half boards hits him in the shoulder, Freddy pukes out a glorious rebound into the slot and just wasn't able to track Hintz fast enough. Not a terrible goal, but one you really want your goalie to do a better job on.

2nd goal was legit. Bad 2 on 1, defender doesn't stop the pass.

The 3rd was pure Froskala, enjoy.
