Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

if the habs just said "suck it, we're picking whoever we think is the best candidate, we'll have a translator"

... what are the actual repercussions to that? french media just complains loudly?

hard to see them losing any money as long as the team isn't an absolute shitshow...

some sponsors pull out?

the only good argument is that it is nice to communicate to the fans in their own language - but the GM never speaks that much and I question how many people actual listen to press conferences with the coach

the habs did have randy cunningworth or whatever his name was as an interim english only coach - my guess is people would have eventually stopped caring if he was actually winning

fuck the system and get a russian only speaking coach

edit:
i should add that many some people stop buying molson beer?

and I guess my response is that this can happen (just indirectly) no matter who the coach or GM is. so I don't think that is the actual issue, for whatever reason.

like, can you imagine if the Blue Jays didn't sign players who needed interpreters to give media statements?

Seems pretty tame.

You probably replace em pretty easily with a good product people believe isn't a mirage. Worth it.

Silliest thing about the francophone policy is that GMs, especially those employed by multi-billion dollar enterprises, don't say anything of substance anyway these days. You could easily have media-facing francophone AGM who just repeats the same platitudes and shares the same "insider" information meet with the media every day.

I also get that the Canadiens are somewhat of a cultural institution and need to care about language, but there is more than one way to address that issue.

I swear that's why actual Habs fans probably won't care and it'll just be the media.

If you have a losing team anything your GM says you're just like "FUCK THIS GUY".

Love that we have Simmonds Ritchie Clifford and people still think we need more toughness.

All because we lost a game and beat the shit out of them.
I don't think we need more toughness. I think we need more nastiness.

Simmonds is a strong guy (and to his credit having a much better year), but not a nasty player. Clifford is garbage and not worth playing imo, and doesn't bring that element anyway (he pretends to, but he's not that guy). Ritchie is maybe the living incarnation of the Snuggles bear, except worse at hockey.

Nastiness and unpredictability (like the shit that Marchand brings to the table, which to be honest, is like Bunting on steroids) is what prevents a pussy from taking a shot at a star player. He doesn't know if he'll get a skate slicing his tendon, or a spear that separates him from his nuts. That's what we need to let the top guys do their thing when the pressure is on, the game gets more physical, and the refs take naps during games.

Another thing about this - sure, we beat the shit out of them, but they almost severely injured a blue chip youngster and they manhandled our best player. It's not about retribution so much as it's about preventing this sort of shit in the first place. So they get penalized (or not) for kneeing Sandin. Does that 2 minute or 4 minute minor make up for 2-3 lost weeks? What if Dubois injured Matthews' neck or something with his attack from behind?

You don't see this really happen to Crosby or Ovechkin. You could say those guys are strong nasty guys in their own right, but I don't know, even though Matty could do a better job standing up for himself, we need to have some fuckface to scare the other team so they don't cross the line in the first place. Because while Matty is a huge guy who could theoretically stick up for himself, guys like Marner, Nylander, and Tavares aren't really the types to be able to do the same. The refs should be the ones providing the protection in large part, but obviously they're not going to do it, so we need another solution.

I think this is something that is mostly imagined and dirty players are gonna be dirty players regardless.

Marchand didn't deter Tom Wilson from almost ending Brandon Carlo's career. Reaves didn't deter Wilson from injuring Jonathan Marchessault. There's tons of examples like this. These plays still happen all the time.
