Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

I don't really get the NTCs in the final year or 2 on these deals. It would make a lot more sense if it was the other way around. "We won't trade you in the first 3-4 years, but we may be in a completely different position in the final year... so we need to be able to move you then."

The ntc is only allowed in UFA eligible years. They can't include it till then. Otherwise they'd be there for the entire contract.

Okay, that makes sense.

Still though... I'd like to see NTCs end in the final year of contracts... or at least in like February of the final season. I'd definitely try for that if I were the GM.

Oh for sure, the PP guy with only a couple years left would be worse than the guy coming off his best year by a mile and signed for 7 into his late 30s. You take Kadri, I’ll keep Tavares and then get McDavid.

I understand wanting to tear it down for a full rebuild, and even trading DeBrincat since he's gotten expensive. The rest of it doesn't make much sense though, I think they may be letting Kubalik go UFA also. Regardless of what you think of him and Strome, that's two NHL assets in the prime of their career gone for zero return.

They probably want to be as bad as possible and join the Bedard sweepstakes but signing these guys and then trading them for anything would make more sense.

Yeah, it's the tank for #1 at all costs strategy.

Hawks fans would be pretty pissed if they stripped it all down and still didn't get 1st overall!
That's the issue here. Even if they finish 32nd overall. the odds are still kinda crappy to get 1st overall. The last 2 straight years the last placed team has got 1st overall. Not sure we'll see a 3rd in a row. Massive disappointment if you don't get 1st overall. Buffalo and Arizona did so much in 2015 to win McDavid and both came up short.
