No. Holding him to deadline was also on the table. Matheson made it worth it as he is cheaper and is serviceable.

Petry is not a player you HAD to do something about immediately. Hextall and dumb dumb made the room.
 
Sure, but you've seen many many more moves that were called impossible that didn't happen.

I'm not saying that you can't move Hoffman. I'm saying that you can't do it without taking bad salary back or retaining. If Hoffman was a gud pro #4-5 LHD who cross checks things and only fucks in missionary I wouldn't be saying this (Joel Edmundson is shit...but he's moveable). But he's a dime a dozen middle 6 left winger who isn't very good and what he's allegedly good at isn't heavily desired among competitive teams because they have much better versions of him in that role already.

Also let's be clear. We don't have to look too far in the rear view mirror to see Petry being a top pairing RHD (one of the rarest archetypes in hockey). Petry and Hoffman aren't similar in any way.

I didn't conflate them. You guys did.

Hoffman will eventually get moved. They'll likely sweeten it with a pick or prospect but retention will likely not happen.

Nothing really. I'm just not going to applaud someone trying to ease their own conscience. I mean I get it, he's legit concerned about how he's perceived, but I don't see it as this magnanimous gesture that some do.
