Around the League 2019-2025 Edition

If the big 3 could deliver expected performances in the close out games, nobody would be talking about Tavares as anything other than an amazing signing who completed the set and was a critical piece of a few cup wins. But they didn't, so there's only scapegoating the guy who was fourth in line behind those guys.

He wasn't 4th in line in terms of salary, though, was he?

this is quite the distortion of reality here

If Matty was healthy this year and we were playing the Oilers right now because he was scoring like Drai, then nobody would be talking about Marner and his contract, or Nylander and his floating, or Tavares and his track record.

Everyone would still be talking about them like they were up through game 2 against Florida - they're different, their balls dropped, they finally figured it out, the coach's system, etc.

This is pure scapegoating against one guy when the exact same criticisms can be made about the other guys.

the criticisms have not been segregated in the way you suggest, pretty much everyone here casts a really damn wide net and dishes them out evenly.

it's really the opposite that is true - most posters here criticize widely, including the core four and JT/Mo. it's only you who refuses to criticize JT at all.

I think there are bigger mistakes than the Tavares signing to be honest. If Covid didn't happen alone no one would care about his contract.
We never really saw Matthews-Tavares-Kadri much. I thought Kadri could have played better year 2 if he stayed (After JT signing).
I really think getting slower every god damn year was beyond stupid. And the Marleau contract was a disaster for a "Mentor" from the freaking San Jose Sharks.
The assets paid for plugs is scary. Think of the depth we could have had. We traded for Ilya Lybushkin twice (2 different Gms).

iffs and buts candies and nuts

If Tavares can only score when 3 other guys score then how is that a good signing?

Thats a lot of money for a guy that can't create offense on his own.

It's a lot of money for 4 guys who can't create anything in the latter stages of a series.

None of them really did anything from middle of game 3 (during which Tavares scored 2 goals) through game 7, except for what the one Matty goal in game 6?

How is any one player going to take any team over the top when that's the situation, and when that's the situation every single year?
